Retail electrical buildout: sales floor, stock, and storefront — not office lighting with registers added on

Retail buildouts fail when the lighting is treated as office lighting and the registers are treated as an afterthought. The sales floor, the stockroom, and the storefront are different electrical jobs on one lease.

In retail the lighting is merchandising, and the registers cannot be an afterthought

Retail lighting is not office lighting turned up. Accent and display light is how product sells, the storefront reads from the street, and the registers and displays need power laid out for a floor plan that will change with the seasons.

  • Display and accent

Track, accent, and display lighting are chosen and circuited to feature product, not to evenly light a room. Dimming and scenes are part of it, not an upgrade.

  • Registers and displays

Point-of-sale, displays, and end-caps get power where the plan puts them — and a floor that gets reset for a season needs circuits that can move with it.

  • The storefront

Signage, window lighting, and the entry read from the sidewalk. Those circuits, and their controls or timers, are scoped with the store, not bolted on at the end.

When a retail buildout isn’t the right job

A store that has to look right and stay open is this job. A restaurant, or a bare TI with no store layout yet, are not.

Customers sit down and eat

That is restaurant electrical.

A bare shell with a TI date, before the store layout is decided

That is tenant improvement electrical.

Retail electrical buildout questions

Is a restaurant just retail with a kitchen?

No. Front of house and back of house on one service is restaurant electrical. This job is a sales floor, stock, and storefront.

The lighting is the whole job.

Sales-floor lighting as a family is retail lighting. This job is power and lighting together for the lease.

We have two weeks to open.

A short turnover is this job if it is a store. A TI package with landlord comments is tenant improvement electrical.

Registers were an afterthought on the last job.

That is why this job exists. Registers, displays, and stockroom power are scoped with the floor, not added after the lighting is hung.
