How rewiring is scoped so the house stays usable

Rewiring is how much of the branch wiring has to come out, and how the work is staged so the house keeps running around it.

  • Bounded damage vs throughout

A chewed, nailed, or wet run is repaired if the rest is sound. Cloth, knob-and-tube, or damage throughout is a whole-home rewire. We look at enough of the circuit to tell those apart.

  • Access and staging

Open walls are a different job than fishing through finished space. Room-by-room staging is how a house stays lived in. The panel is part of that conversation because new circuits have to land somewhere.

  • Grounds and ungrounded outlets

A two-prong receptacle is not made safe by a three-prong cover. GFCI can protect a location; it does not create a ground. Running a ground, or replacing the branch, is the upgrade.

  • The panel still has to take the new circuits

A rewire that lands on a panel with no spaces, or on equipment nobody makes breakers for, is two jobs. That is named before the first room is opened.

Rewiring questions

What to settle before walls are opened.

The plumber cut a cable. Is that a rewire?

Usually not. One cut run is damaged wiring repair. Widespread damage, or a house wired the same way throughout, is a whole-home rewire.

Can GFCI replace a real ground?

It can protect a two-prong location. It does not create a ground. An ungrounded-outlet upgrade is the conductor back to the panel, not a three-prong on two wires.

Do you rewire the whole house at once?

Not if it does not have to be. Room by room is how an occupied Sacramento house stays usable. The assessment says how far it actually has to go.

What do you need from me?

What you can see — cloth, two-prong outlets, a cut run — and whether walls are already open. A photo of the panel with the door open belongs with that.

Can I rewire my home myself?

A whole-house rewire is permitted C-10 work.
