How equipment power is sized to the nameplate, not the old breaker

Each machine gets a home. The listing, the disconnect in sight, and whether it shares with lighting are the whole job.

  • The nameplate and a disconnect in sight

Amperage, voltage, and phase come off the unit — not the breaker that happened to be there. HVAC, kitchen equipment, and machinery each want a disconnect the operator can reach.

  • Continuous vs motor start

Refrigeration and cooking loads run all day. Motors and compressors surge. Protection that holds through inrush and still trips on a fault is sized twice, not guessed from horsepower.

  • Three-phase is rotation as well as a feed

A swapped rotation or a missing disconnect is how a machine is damaged on the first start. If the building does not have three-phase where the unit sits, that is a distribution job first.

  • A cord is not the last twenty feet

Extension cords and leftover whips are how shops live with a move that was never finished. The feed, the disconnect, and a proper path to the machine are the actual job.

Equipment power questions

What to send with the nameplate photo.

Can the new unit use the old breaker?

Only if the nameplate matches. HVAC replacements and kitchen swaps fail inspection when the last unit’s breaker is reused. Start at HVAC electrical or the equipment page that owns the listing.

Do you connect three-phase equipment?

Yes — rotation, protection, and a disconnect at the machine. The feed has to exist first. That connection is three-phase equipment connection.

Is a walk-in the same as kitchen lighting?

No. Refrigeration is a continuous load and does not share with lighting or a register. That is refrigeration electrical.

What do you need from us?

The nameplate, where the unit sits, and whether a disconnect is already in sight. A photo of the panel or the existing feed belongs with that.
