Pump circuits: a dedicated run with a disconnect at the equipment — sump, booster, well, or process

Pump circuits are dedicated runs with a disconnect in sight of the motor. Controls, floats, and whether the pump is outdoor or in a pit change the device, not the need for a real circuit.

Half of a pump circuit is control — floats, pressure, and how it is started

A pump is a motor plus a reason to run. The float, the pressure switch, or the well controller decides when it starts, and that control is wired so a failed sensor does not cook the pump or flood the pit.

  • Two-wire or three-wire

A submersible well pump is two-wire or three-wire depending on where the start components live — the wrong one leaves the pump unstartable or the control box useless.

  • Pressure, float, or level

A booster runs on a pressure switch, a sump on a float, a process pump on a level control. The control is part of the circuit, not an accessory added after.

  • Wet-location and GFCI

A pit, a fountain, or an outdoor set is a weather and GFCI question the indoor version never has — the location changes the devices, not the need for a dedicated run.

When a pump circuit isn’t the right job

The pump and its disconnect are this job. A generic motor, or a missing disconnect on a sound feed, are not.

It is a motor, not a pump

That is motor circuits.

The disconnect is missing and the feed is already right

That is commercial disconnects.

Pump circuits questions

Do the floats ride on the same circuit as the motor?

Not as a plan. Controls and the motor get separated so a failed float does not take the pump — or the opposite. A generic motor, not a pump, is motor circuits.

It is outside or in a pit.

The location changes the device — weather-rated, GFCI where it belongs — not the need for a dedicated circuit and a disconnect at the equipment.

The pump will not start.

Start current and a disconnect that actually isolates the motor are this job. A machine on the floor that is not a pump is machinery circuits.

Can it share with a general receptacle?

No. A pump on a shop receptacle is how a wet pit takes out a workbench.
