How a dedicated circuit is sized to the nameplate

A dedicated circuit is isolation, not a leftover breaker. The listing on the equipment decides 120 or 240, the receptacle, and the disconnect.

  • The nameplate, not a guess

Amperage, voltage, and whether the unit is cord-and-plug or hardwired come off the listing. A leftover 14-50 is not a range circuit, and a 20-amp spare is not a dryer.

  • Spare space is not spare capacity

A full panel can still have headroom — that is a subpanel. A service that is already short cannot take another large load. That whether-decision is panel upgrade.

  • The route and the disconnect

The run, the surface, and a disconnect in sight of the equipment (where the listing wants one) are the rest of the job. Access through finished space is what moves the cost.

  • Named loads have their own page

A range, dryer, water heater, spa, sauna, welder, or RV outlet is a named circuit. This family is how those jobs are told apart from a generic 120- or 240-volt run.

Dedicated circuit questions

What to settle before a new homerun is pulled.

Can you use the old 240-volt outlet?

Only if it matches the new listing — voltage, amperage, and the NEMA configuration. A range, dryer, and RV outlet are not interchangeable.

Do I need a new circuit or just a new outlet?

If the load cannot share, it is a dedicated circuit from the panel. A new receptacle on a circuit that can carry it is outlet installation.

Will this force a panel upgrade?

Not automatically. Spare spaces and spare capacity are different findings. Whether you need more capacity is the panel upgrade question.

What do you need from me?

The equipment model and the nameplate, where it will sit, and a photo of the panel with the door open. Do not buy the receptacle or breaker first.

What is considered a dedicated circuit?

One breaker, one load: a dryer, a welder, or a microwave on its own cable back to the panel.

Should a bathroom be on a dedicated circuit?

Bathrooms need their own outlet circuit and GFCI protection. Lights can share a circuit or connect to a stand alone depending on the layout.
