Water heater circuit: like-for-like on an electric tank — with the disconnect at the equipment
A water-heater circuit is a dedicated run for an electric tank, sized to the unit and landed with a disconnect in sight of it. Replacing like-for-like on a sound circuit is one job. A heat-pump conversion is another.

The existing electric-tank circuit is reused or corrected. The disconnect stays at the equipment.

Water heater circuit: an electric tank is a continuous load — sized at 125%, with a disconnect in sight
A resistance water heater runs long enough that the code treats it as a continuous load: the circuit is sized above the element draw, not right at it, and the tank gets a disconnect within sight so it can be isolated for service.

A typical tank is a 30-amp 240-volt circuit for a 4500-watt element, sized with continuous-load margin — not squeezed onto the smallest breaker that will hold.

The heater needs a means to isolate it within sight — a breaker across the garage is not that when someone has to work on the tank.

Bonding where required
Where the plumbing calls for it, the hot and cold lines at the heater are bonded — a small step that is easy to skip and a common inspection catch.

Does an electric water heater require a 220 circuit?
Most storage electric heaters are 240 volt. A 120 volt point-of-use unit is a different circuit. We read the rating plate.
