Heat-pump water-heater circuit: not a like-for-like swap for a gas tank
A heat-pump water heater needs a dedicated circuit, clearance, and a place for condensate. It is not a like-for-like swap for a gas tank. The service has to carry it with the rest of the house, not just the nameplate in isolation.
The circuit
Most units want a dedicated 240-volt run and a disconnect at the equipment. A leftover 120-volt gas-heater outlet is not that circuit.
Space and condensate
The unit needs room to pull air, and a drain for condensate. A tight closet that worked for a gas tank often does not work for a heat-pump unit.
The rest of the service
Whether the home needs more capacity is the panel upgrade question — the answer can be no. If a range or a dryer is coming out with it, start at the electrification assessment.
A heat-pump water heater breathes and drips — the location is half the install
A heat-pump water heater is a small air conditioner on a tank. It needs a volume of air to pull heat from, a path for the condensate it produces, and it cools and dehumidifies the space it sits in — so where it goes matters as much as the circuit.

Air volume or ducting
The unit needs enough room air, or ducting, to work — a closet that starves it runs it inefficiently or on the backup elements it was bought to avoid.

Condensate has to go somewhere
Like an AC, it drips. A drain or a condensate pump is part of the install, not a surprise found after it runs.

The electrical is often lighter than a resistance tank — the harder parts are the air, the drain, and where the cooled air is welcome.
When the heat-pump water-heater circuit isn’t the right job
The heat-pump water heater is this job. A like-for-like electric tank, or several appliances coming out together, are not.

Can I use the existing water-heater circuit?
Only if it matches the unit. A gas heater leaves 120 volts behind. An existing electric-tank circuit is the water heater circuit page — like-for-like, not this conversion.
Do I need a panel upgrade for a heat-pump water heater?
Not automatically. A heat-pump water heater draws far less than a resistance one — often a 15- to 30-amp circuit — so it is rarely what forces an upgrade. Whether the service is short is the panel upgrade question, and the answer is often no.
The closet is tight. Does that matter?
Yes. The unit needs clearance and a place for condensate. A closet that held a gas tank may not hold a heat-pump unit without a louvered door or a different location.
