Induction range circuit: sized to the nameplate — not to a generic 40-amp guess

An induction range is a large continuous load. The circuit, the receptacle or hardwire, and the service have to match the range you are actually installing. A gas-to-induction swap is a capacity question as much as a wiring question.

  • The nameplate decides

    Amperage, whether the unit is hardwired, and the receptacle type come from the range you will use. A 40-amp guess is how people land the wrong breaker on the right wire — or the other way around.

  • Gas coming out

    A gas range usually sat on a small 120-volt outlet. Induction needs a dedicated 240-volt run. Whether the service can carry it is the panel upgrade question — the answer can be no.

  • Several appliances at once

    If a dryer, a water heater, or a heat pump is coming out with the range, start at the electrification assessment so the panel is not opened three times.

A four-wire circuit with a neutral, and the connection the range is listed for

A modern range is a four-wire 240-volt circuit — two hots, a neutral, and a ground — because its electronics and any 120-volt features need that neutral. The plug or hardwire, and the receptacle type, follow the appliance listing, not the old three-wire outlet on the wall.

  • Four wires, not three

    A neutral is required for the range’s controls and 120-volt loads. An old three-prong range outlet is not code for a new install, and adapting one is not the fix.

  • The right receptacle

    A cord-and-plug range needs the matching 14-50 or the listed receptacle; a hardwired unit needs the right whip and box. The listing decides which.

  • Sized to the plate

    The circuit is sized to the range nameplate, which is why the number is not a flat 40 amps for every unit.

Can I use the existing range circuit?

Only if it matches the nameplate. Gas ranges almost never leave a 240-volt circuit behind. An existing electric-range circuit that is the wrong rating or the wrong receptacle is the range circuit page, not a guess at 40 amps.

Do I need a panel upgrade for induction?

Not automatically. An induction range is a 40- to 50-amp 240-volt load; a modern 200-amp service carries one easily, and plenty of 100-amp services do too. Whether yours is short is the panel upgrade question — the answer can be no.

Should I buy the range first?

Easier not to. The nameplate decides the circuit. Buying a 50-amp range for a 40-amp circuit is how people buy twice.
