An induction range is a large dedicated 240-volt load. The circuit, the receptacle or hardwire, and the breaker have to match the appliance you are actually installing. A 40-amp guess is how people land the wrong breaker on the right wire — or the other way around.

A gas range usually sat on a small 120-volt outlet for controls and ignition. That outlet is not an induction circuit. The question that matters is not “Can I use the plug that is already there?” It is what this range’s nameplate actually calls for — voltage, amperage, four-wire, cord or conduit — and whether the kitchen has that circuit yet. For Sacramento homeowners converting from gas, that is a new 240-volt run more often than a receptacle swap.

Read the nameplate and the installation instructions for the exact model. Current listings commonly call for a dedicated 120/240-volt branch circuit; a 40-amp or 50-amp two-pole breaker, as the listing states; four conductors — two hots, a neutral, and an equipment ground; and the receptacle or hardwire the range is listed for, not a leftover 14-50 from a different appliance.

A GE Café slide-in induction range (CHS995) currently lists about 15.5 kW at 240 volts and a 40-amp breaker, with a note to check local code for the required size. A Bosch 36-inch induction cooktop (NIT8666SUC) currently lists 9.6 kW, a 40-amp circuit, and no plug — conduit to a junction box. Those are not the same job as each other, and neither is a gas-range outlet. The listing on your unit controls.

The nameplate decides the circuit

The rating plate is on the range or cooktop — often on the oven frame, the side of a drawer, or the underside of a cooktop. It states kW at 240 volts and at 208 volts, the minimum branch-circuit / breaker size, and whether the unit is listed for cord-and-plug, conduit, or both.

Bosch’s current range instructions tell the installer to check that kW rating, then size the circuit from the table — commonly 40 or 50 amps depending on the model and the local code. GE’s current electric-range instructions call for an individual, properly grounded branch circuit, commonly 40 amps minimum for the models they document, and a UL-listed range cord marked for range use.

Do not size from a prior house, a showroom tag, or a leftover 14-50. The last house’s circuit, a tag that said “most induction needs,” and the 50-amp 14-50 sitting in a garage from an RV or welder do not control this kitchen. Buy the appliance after the nameplate is known, or at least before the circuit is pulled. Buying a 50-amp range for a 40-amp circuit is how people buy twice. The circuit follows the listing; the listing follows the model.

A gas-range outlet is not an induction circuit

A gas range in a Sacramento kitchen almost never leaves a 240-volt circuit behind. It leaves a gas shutoff, a 120-volt receptacle for the clock, controls, and ignition, and sometimes nothing electrical at all if the range was all-mechanical. Induction needs a dedicated 240-volt run to that location.

The existing 120-volt outlet can stay for a nearby small-appliance load if the kitchen plan wants it. It cannot be adapted into the range circuit. That conversion is induction range circuit work — a new branch, not a plug change. The old gas-range outlet is 120 volts. Induction is not.

Four-wire, not a three-prong adapter

A modern range is a four-wire 240-volt circuit: two ungrounded conductors (the 240 volts for the heating), a grounded conductor (neutral) for 120-volt controls, lights, and clocks, and an equipment grounding conductor. The National Electrical Code has required a four-conductor connection for new range installations since 1996.

GE’s current installation instructions repeat that: new construction uses four-wire; a three-wire cord still exists for some existing circuits, with a ground strap that bonds ground to neutral at the range. A new gas-to-induction conversion in Sacramento is new work. Plan four-wire.

An adapter that turns a three-prong outlet into a four-prong cord is not the fix. The missing conductor is in the wall, not in the plug. New work is four-wire; the missing ground is not in the adapter.

40-amp vs 50-amp is not a guess

Both sizes show up on current induction listings. A 30-inch slide-in may be 40 amps. A larger range, or a 36-inch cooktop plus a separate wall oven, may be 50 amps — or two circuits. Some units are 40. Some are 50. Some cooktops plus ovens are two circuits. Do not assume 40 amps for every model.

The breaker, the conductor, and the cord or conduit have to match each other and the nameplate. A 50-amp cord on a 40-amp circuit, or a 40-amp breaker on a 50-amp listing, is a mismatch. GE currently sells four-wire range cords in both 40-amp and 50-amp ratings and tells the installer to match the NEMA plug to the receptacle in the home. The cord is selected after the circuit is known. The circuit is selected after the nameplate is known.

Hardwire vs cord-and-plug

Some induction appliances arrive with a junction and want conduit. Bosch’s 36-inch cooktop above lists plug type: no plug and a factory conduit length. Some ranges want a UL-listed range cord and a matching receptacle, commonly a NEMA 14-50 for a 50-amp listing, or the 40-amp range receptacle the instructions name.

A leftover 14-50 from a dryer or an EV experiment is not automatically the right landing, and landing a 14-50 because that is what was on the shelf is the same mistake. The receptacle matches the listing, not the leftover plug. A dryer circuit is usually a 30-amp 14-30. A range circuit is a different rating and a different job.

If the unit is listed for hardwire, the junction box location in the cabinet run has to be planned before the range slides in. Hardwiring a unit listed for a cord, or the reverse, is a listing mismatch. The installation instructions name the connection. Junction location is part of the cabinet plan. GE notes that terminals are not accessible after the range is installed, so the cord or conduit has to be right the first time.

Cooktop, range, and wall oven are different nameplates

An induction range is one appliance: cooktop plus oven, one circuit as listed. An induction cooktop is often a separate appliance from the wall oven under it. Two nameplates can mean two circuits. A 30-inch cooktop at 40 amps plus a wall oven at 30 or 40 amps is not “the range circuit.” It is two dedicated runs, two breakers, and a cabinet plan that leaves room for both junctions.

Like-for-like replacement of an existing electric range — already 240 volts, already four-wire, wrong plug or wrong rating — is range and cooktop circuit work. Gas-to-induction, or a cooktop that never had 240 volts in that island, is the induction circuit page. Keep those apart.

Where does the receptacle or junction go?

The receptacle or junction has to be where the range or cooktop can actually reach it. Manufacturer drawings show an acceptable outlet area behind or beside the unit. An island cooktop needs the run in the island, with a junction that can be reached after the stone is on. A slide-in range needs the box in the manufacturer’s shaded zone so the unit sits against the wall.

That is why the electrical is planned before cabinets and counters close. Kitchen sequencing lives on electrical planning for a kitchen remodel. The nameplate and the circuit are the focus here, not the whole kitchen.

Does an induction range need a panel upgrade?

An induction range is typically a 40- to 50-amp 240-volt load. A modern 200-amp service carries one easily. Plenty of 100-amp services do too. Whether this house is short is a load calculation — the same math as any other large appliance — and the answer can be no. That calculation is panel upgrade work when it is needed — not a default for every kitchen, and not automatic.

If a dryer, a water heater, or a heat pump is coming out with the range, start at whole-home electrification: order of work so the panel is not opened three times. One induction circuit, on a service that already has room, is still this job.

This circuit is not the old gas-range 120-volt outlet, a dryer 14-30, a random 14-50 in the garage, a three-prong adapter, or a reason to assume 200 amps. A new circuit is permit-required work. Induction range electrical work in Sacramento: what to do next

For a typical Sacramento gas-to-induction conversion:

  1. Select the exact range or cooktop model.
  2. Read the nameplate — kW, volts, amps, cord or conduit.
  3. Plan a dedicated four-wire 240-volt circuit to that listing, not a 40-amp habit.
  4. Confirm cord-and-plug vs hardwire and match the receptacle or junction to the listing.
  5. Identify the existing kitchen circuit — gas 120V vs existing 240V — and do not treat the old gas outlet as the new supply.
  6. Count cooktop, range, and wall oven as separate nameplates when they are separate appliances.
  7. Place the receptacle or junction where the manufacturer drawing puts it, while the island or slide-in path is still open.
  8. Check panel space. Treat service capacity as a separate calculation if other large loads are coming too.
  9. Confirm the City, County, or other permitting jurisdiction. A new circuit is minor-permit work.
  10. Coordinate the gas line as a separate trade. Have a qualified contractor cap the line if the gas range is permanently removed.

Do not size the circuit from the old gas outlet, from a 40-amp habit, or from a leftover 14-50.

What size circuit does an induction range need?

The nameplate states it. Current listings are commonly a dedicated 40-amp or 50-amp 120/240-volt circuit. Do not assume 40 amps for every model.

What size breaker does an induction cooktop need?

Whatever the cooktop listing says. A current Bosch 36-inch induction cooktop lists 40 amps. A different width or brand can differ. A separate wall oven is a second nameplate.

Can I use the existing range outlet?

Only if it already matches the nameplate — voltage, amperage, four-wire, and the listed connection. A gas-range outlet almost never does.

Can I use a three-prong range outlet?

Not for new work. Plan four-wire: two hots, a neutral, and an equipment grounding conductor. An adapter is not the missing conductor.

Is a 14-50 the induction outlet?

Sometimes, when the listing is 50 amps and the unit is cord-and-plug. A 40-amp listing wants the matching 40-amp range connection. A dryer 14-30 is not it.

Does induction need to be hardwired?

Some cooktops ship with conduit and no plug. Some ranges use a listed range cord. The installation instructions decide.

Do I need a panel upgrade for induction?

Not automatically. Whether the service can carry this load with the rest of the house is a calculation. The answer can be no. That is a different page from this circuit.

Start at whole-home electrification; the induction circuit comes together once the order of work is known.

Should I buy the range first?

Easier not to, until the nameplate is in hand. The circuit is sized to that plate.

Does an induction range circuit need a permit?
