An induction range is a large dedicated 240-volt load. The circuit, the receptacle or hardwire, and the breaker have to match the appliance you are actually installing. A 40-amp guess is how people land the wrong breaker on the right wire — or the other way around.
A gas range usually sat on a small 120-volt outlet for controls and ignition. That outlet is not an induction circuit. The question that matters is not “Can I use the plug that is already there?” It is what this range’s nameplate actually calls for — voltage, amperage, four-wire, cord or conduit — and whether the kitchen has that circuit yet. For Sacramento homeowners converting from gas, that is a new 240-volt run more often than a receptacle swap.

Read the nameplate and the installation instructions for the exact model. Current listings commonly call for a dedicated 120/240-volt branch circuit; a 40-amp or 50-amp two-pole breaker, as the listing states; four conductors — two hots, a neutral, and an equipment ground; and the receptacle or hardwire the range is listed for, not a leftover 14-50 from a different appliance.
A GE Café slide-in induction range (CHS995) currently lists about 15.5 kW at 240 volts and a 40-amp breaker, with a note to check local code for the required size. A Bosch 36-inch induction cooktop (NIT8666SUC) currently lists 9.6 kW, a 40-amp circuit, and no plug — conduit to a junction box. Those are not the same job as each other, and neither is a gas-range outlet. The listing on your unit controls.

The nameplate decides the circuit
The rating plate is on the range or cooktop — often on the oven frame, the side of a drawer, or the underside of a cooktop. It states kW at 240 volts and at 208 volts, the minimum branch-circuit / breaker size, and whether the unit is listed for cord-and-plug, conduit, or both.
Bosch’s current range instructions tell the installer to check that kW rating, then size the circuit from the table — commonly 40 or 50 amps depending on the model and the local code. GE’s current electric-range instructions call for an individual, properly grounded branch circuit, commonly 40 amps minimum for the models they document, and a UL-listed range cord marked for range use.
Do not size from a prior house, a showroom tag, or a leftover 14-50. The last house’s circuit, a tag that said “most induction needs,” and the 50-amp 14-50 sitting in a garage from an RV or welder do not control this kitchen. Buy the appliance after the nameplate is known, or at least before the circuit is pulled. Buying a 50-amp range for a 40-amp circuit is how people buy twice. The circuit follows the listing; the listing follows the model.
A gas-range outlet is not an induction circuit
A gas range in a Sacramento kitchen almost never leaves a 240-volt circuit behind. It leaves a gas shutoff, a 120-volt receptacle for the clock, controls, and ignition, and sometimes nothing electrical at all if the range was all-mechanical. Induction needs a dedicated 240-volt run to that location.
The existing 120-volt outlet can stay for a nearby small-appliance load if the kitchen plan wants it. It cannot be adapted into the range circuit. That conversion is induction range circuit work — a new branch, not a plug change. The old gas-range outlet is 120 volts. Induction is not.
Four-wire, not a three-prong adapter
A modern range is a four-wire 240-volt circuit: two ungrounded conductors (the 240 volts for the heating), a grounded conductor (neutral) for 120-volt controls, lights, and clocks, and an equipment grounding conductor. The National Electrical Code has required a four-conductor connection for new range installations since 1996.
GE’s current installation instructions repeat that: new construction uses four-wire; a three-wire cord still exists for some existing circuits, with a ground strap that bonds ground to neutral at the range. A new gas-to-induction conversion in Sacramento is new work. Plan four-wire.
An adapter that turns a three-prong outlet into a four-prong cord is not the fix. The missing conductor is in the wall, not in the plug. New work is four-wire; the missing ground is not in the adapter.
40-amp vs 50-amp is not a guess
Both sizes show up on current induction listings. A 30-inch slide-in may be 40 amps. A larger range, or a 36-inch cooktop plus a separate wall oven, may be 50 amps — or two circuits. Some units are 40. Some are 50. Some cooktops plus ovens are two circuits. Do not assume 40 amps for every model.
The breaker, the conductor, and the cord or conduit have to match each other and the nameplate. A 50-amp cord on a 40-amp circuit, or a 40-amp breaker on a 50-amp listing, is a mismatch. GE currently sells four-wire range cords in both 40-amp and 50-amp ratings and tells the installer to match the NEMA plug to the receptacle in the home. The cord is selected after the circuit is known. The circuit is selected after the nameplate is known.
