An electric tankless water heater looks compact, but a whole-house model can be one of the largest electrical loads in a home. Depending on the exact heater, installation may require 240V power; one, two, or three dedicated double-pole circuits; several breaker spaces; multiple conductor runs from the panel; roughly 50A to 150A of heater load in common 12–36 kW whole-house examples; a residential load calculation; panel or service work if the existing system cannot support the heater; and permits and inspections. The exact model controls the electrical design.

Before buying the heater, verify:

How many amps does an electric tankless water heater use?

Electric tankless water heaters are rated in kilowatts. At 240V:

This table shows theoretical heater current only. It is not a breaker-size or wire-size chart. Actual equipment can divide that load across multiple heating sections and multiple branch circuits.

A whole-house electric tankless heater is therefore a model-specific electrical project, not one generic “water heater circuit.”

What size breaker does an electric tankless water heater need?

There is no universal breaker size. The required breaker arrangement comes from the exact heater. Stiebel Eltron’s current Tempra manual, for example, specifies 1 × 50A double-pole breaker for Tempra 12; 2 × 30A double-pole breakers for Tempra 15; 2 × 40A double-pole breakers for Tempra 20; 2 × 50A double-pole breakers for Tempra 24; 3 × 40A double-pole breakers for Tempra 29; and 3 × 50A double-pole breakers for Tempra 36. Smaller units may use one breaker; mid-size whole-house units may use two; large whole-house units may use three. Other manufacturers can use different configurations. Search by manufacturer, exact model, and installation manual — not by kW alone.

Can one large breaker replace several required breakers? No, not when the equipment is designed and listed for multiple independent circuits. If the manual requires two or three supply circuits, follow that circuit architecture.

Does an electric tankless water heater always need a 125% breaker? No universal 125% rule should be applied blindly. Stiebel Eltron’s current Tempra manual states that its recommended overcurrent protection is sized at 100% of load and instructs installers to check local codes for compliance. The correct hierarchy is:

  1. exact equipment listing;
  2. manufacturer instructions;
  3. applicable electrical code;
  4. local requirements.

A generic internet multiplier should not replace those inputs.

Does an electric tankless water heater need dedicated circuits? Yes. Whole-house electric tankless units generally require dedicated branch circuits according to the equipment design. Stiebel Eltron’s Tempra manual requires one dedicated circuit for Tempra 12; two independent circuits for Tempra 15, 20, and 24; and three independent circuits for Tempra 29 and 36. These circuits should not be shared with general household loads.

How many panel spaces does an electric tankless water heater need? A standard double-pole breaker commonly occupies two panel positions. That means a heater requiring 1 double-pole breaker commonly needs 2 spaces; 2 double-pole breakers commonly need 4 spaces; 3 double-pole breakers commonly need 6 spaces. Panel design matters, so verify the actual panel. This is why a large tankless heater can create a panel-space problem even before service capacity is considered.

What wire size does an electric tankless water heater need?

There is no universal wire size. Required conductor size depends on the exact model, breaker size, number of circuits, conductor material, terminal limitations, wiring method, run length and voltage drop, and applicable code. Stiebel Eltron’s Tempra specifications illustrate the point: as heater output rises, the published installation uses multiple copper conductor sets rather than one oversized cable.

A large tankless heater may need several separate conductor runs, not one larger wire.

Do not size conductors from a generic “tankless water heater wire size” chart.

Does an electric tankless water heater need 240V? Many whole-house residential electric tankless water heaters use 240V. Some whole-house equipment can also operate at 208V, usually at reduced wattage. Point-of-use models can be different. A.O. Smith currently lists a 120V, 2.4 kW point-of-use electric tankless water heater at 20A with a 20A breaker and #12 AWG wire. So “electric tankless = always 240V” is false. Point-of-use units may be 120V, 208V, 240V, or another listed voltage; whole-house residential units commonly use 240V. Always check the exact model.

Do not apply point-of-use electrical requirements to a whole-house heater. Point-of-use units are designed for a limited fixture or application such as one lavatory, a utility sink, or a remote handwashing location, and electrical demand can be much smaller. Whole-house units are designed to support much larger hot-water demand. As required output rises, so do kW, total current, breaker count, conductor count, panel-space requirements, and service-capacity concerns. A heater being physically small does not mean its electrical requirement is small.

What size electrical service does an electric tankless water heater need?

There is no universal rule such as “electric tankless requires 200A.” The heater must be evaluated with the rest of the home. Relevant loads include HVAC, an electric range, an electric dryer, an EV charger, water heating, lighting and receptacle load, and other fixed appliances. The correct service-size question is answered with the exact heater and a residential load calculation.

Can a 100A service handle an electric tankless water heater? Possibly for a small unit. A large whole-house model can be impractical on 100A service because the heater alone may approach or exceed the scale of the entire service rating. That does not mean every 100A home is automatically disqualified. It means do not buy a large whole-house electric tankless heater before the service is evaluated.

Can a 125A service handle an electric tankless water heater? Sometimes. A 125A service provides more capacity than 100A, but a large tankless heater can still consume a substantial share of available service capacity. The answer depends on the heater, HVAC, cooking, dryer, EV charging, and other major loads.

Is 200A service enough for an electric tankless water heater? Sometimes. Not for every heater. In Stiebel Eltron’s current Tempra manual, footnotes to the electrical data state that Tempra 24 requires a 150A main service, Tempra 29 requires a 200A main service, and Tempra 36 requires a 300A main service. Those statements apply to those specific models. They show why 200A service is not automatically enough for every large whole-house electric tankless heater.

Send the tankless model number and a photo of the panel with the door open — the nameplate decides the breakers, wire, and whether the service supports it.

Electric tankless water heater panel and service requirements

A successful installation has to pass two separate tests: does the panel have enough physical breaker space, and does the electrical service have enough load capacity? Those are not the same question.

Does an electric tankless water heater require a panel upgrade? Sometimes. Not automatically. Panel work may be needed because there are not enough breaker positions, existing equipment is not suitable for the required circuits, panel condition requires correction, or service capacity is inadequate and a broader service project is needed. A large tankless heater does not automatically mean the panel must be replaced.

Does a subpanel add capacity for an electric tankless water heater? No. A subpanel can provide more breaker positions, another distribution point, and shorter branch-circuit routing. It does not create additional service capacity.

Can load management help? Sometimes. Load management may help coordinate other major loads such as EV charging. But hot water is normally expected on demand, so tankless water heating is not always a practical load to shed. Load management is a design tool, not a substitute for the load calculation.

What if the house also has an EV charger? Plan both loads together. A large tankless heater plus Level 2 EV charging can create substantial combined demand. That does not make the combination impossible. It means the electrical system should be evaluated as one system rather than as two unrelated installations.

Gas-to-electric conversion and other water heaters

A gas-to-electric tankless conversion should be evaluated before the gas water heater is removed. The existing gas appliance may have gas piping, venting, and a small electrical connection for controls. That does not mean the home has electrical infrastructure for a whole-house electric tankless heater. Conversion may require two or three new 240V circuits, several new conductor runs, four to six panel spaces, a load calculation, panel work, service work, and permit coordination.

Replacing a gas tankless water heater with electric tankless. The appliances may both be called “tankless,” but electrically they are very different. A gas tankless unit obtains most heating energy from gas. A whole-house electric tankless unit obtains it from the electrical service.

Replacing a gas storage water heater with electric tankless. The electrical change can be even larger. A gas storage water heater may use little household electricity. A whole-house electric tankless heater can introduce a 50A–150A-scale electrical load depending on the model. If other gas appliances are also being converted, plan those projects together.

Electric tankless vs electric tank water heater. A conventional electric storage heater commonly uses one dedicated 240V circuit. A large whole-house electric tankless heater may require two or three dedicated 240V circuits, much more instantaneous power, and several additional panel spaces. Replacing an electric tank with electric tankless is therefore not necessarily a like-for-like electrical swap. See water heater circuit installation.

Electric tankless vs heat-pump water heater. Heat-pump water heaters can use much less instantaneous electrical power than large whole-house electric tankless units. That can make heat-pump equipment easier to integrate when service capacity is limited. But heat-pump water heaters have different requirements involving location, airflow, condensate, and equipment clearances. See heat-pump water-heater circuit.

How to size and plan an electric tankless installation

Electrical planning starts with selecting a heater capable of the required hot-water output. Relevant variables include flow rate, incoming water temperature, desired outlet temperature, and simultaneous hot-water use. Higher required flow rate or temperature rise generally means more kW, and more kW means greater electrical demand. Do not choose a whole-house electric tankless heater only by bathroom count, physical dimensions, or an advertised “whole-house” label. Use this sequence:

  1. determine hot-water requirement;
  2. select an appropriate heater;
  3. verify its electrical requirements;
  4. determine whether the home can support it.

Large electric tankless units can require multiple substantial branch circuits, so routing and inspection planning matter. Before choosing the final heater location, check distance from the panel, attic or crawlspace access, wall access, conductor quantity, conduit requirements, routing complexity, and voltage drop.

Heater location. A location ideal for plumbing can be difficult electrically. A location close to the panel can be easy electrically but poor for water distribution. The best location balances plumbing, electrical routing, manufacturer clearance, and serviceability.

Does an electric tankless water heater need a disconnect? Do not assume every model uses the same disconnect arrangement. Current Stiebel Eltron Tempra instructions refer to the circuit breakers and any disconnect switches serving the appliance and require all such means to be off before service. The final disconnecting-means requirement depends on the exact equipment, installation location, disconnecting means provided, applicable electrical code, and local requirements. Resolve it from the model and installation, not from a generic rule.

Do tankless water heater circuits need inspection before drywall? When permitted work requires inspection before concealment, inspect it before covering the wiring. The City of Sacramento states that inspections are required before permitted work is covered or concealed. That matters when new circuits run through open walls, ceilings, remodel areas, or additions. Do not close the wall before the required inspection.

Electric tankless water heater permit requirements in Sacramento

Permit requirements can apply to both the water-heater work and new electrical circuits.

The City of Sacramento currently lists residential and commercial water heaters and new residential electrical circuits as minor-permit work. For residential projects, current City Electronic Plan Check guidance lists water-heater replacement and electrical circuits as work that generally does not require conventional plan review. That does not mean no permit is required.

No plan review ≠ no permit.

2026 City of Sacramento water heater virtual inspection requirement. Starting January 12, 2026, the City requires virtual inspections for residential Minor Water Heater permit types. That requirement applies to the Minor Water Heater permit process. A separate electrical-circuit scope can have its own inspection requirements, so do not assume every part of a tankless conversion follows the same inspection path.

Sacramento County separately identifies water heaters, electrical panels, and electrical circuits among typical permit-required work. If the property is in unincorporated Sacramento County, use the County permit process rather than City of Sacramento procedures. A Sacramento mailing address does not necessarily mean the property is in the City of Sacramento.

Before installing a whole-house electric tankless water heater, answer these questions in order:

  1. What exact model is being installed?
  2. How many amps does it draw?
  3. How many dedicated circuits and breakers does it require?
  4. What wire sizes does the manufacturer specify?
  5. How many panel spaces are required?
  6. Can the existing service support the heater with the rest of the house?
  7. What permit and inspection process applies to the address?

Do not buy the heater first and solve the electrical requirements afterward. Before ordering, collect the exact electrical specifications: manufacturer, exact model, kW rating, voltage, published max amp load, number of required circuits, breaker sizes, manufacturer wire requirements, disconnect requirements, and flow-rate/temperature-rise sizing data. Record the existing electrical system as well — main service rating, panel manufacturer/model, available breaker spaces, existing subpanels, HVAC load, electric cooking, electric dryer, EV charging, other major fixed loads, and a load calculation if needed. Then lock heater location, distance from the panel, circuit route, plumbing route, permit jurisdiction, and inspection sequence. Do this before purchase. A heater that cannot be supported by the existing electrical system is not a bargain because it fits on the wall.

Can an electric tankless water heater share a circuit?

Whole-house units should be supplied by the dedicated circuit arrangement required by the manufacturer. Do not share those circuits with general household loads.

How many panel spaces does a 27 kW tankless water heater need?

It depends on the exact model. A model requiring three double-pole breakers would commonly need six panel positions. Another 27 kW-class heater can use a different circuit arrangement.

Should I buy the tankless water heater before calling an electrician?

No. Choose the exact model you are considering, then verify its breaker, circuit, wire, panel-space, and service requirements before purchase.

Can I install electric tankless with a 200A panel and an EV charger?

Possibly, but the combination needs a whole-house load evaluation. A 200A service is not automatically sufficient for every large tankless heater plus EV charging.

Is a 36 kW electric tankless water heater a large electrical load?

Yes. At 240V, 36 kW corresponds to about 150A of heater load. Stiebel Eltron’s Tempra 36 manual data specifies three 50A circuits and states that model requires a 300A main service.

Does electric tankless save panel space compared with a tank water heater?

Usually not for a large whole-house model. A conventional electric tank often uses one double-pole breaker, while a large electric tankless unit can require several.

Does a tankless water heater need a permit?
