Commercial subpanel: more distribution without increasing the utility service

A commercial subpanel adds breaker space and a local disconnect where the load is. It is the right job when the service still has capacity and the existing can does not have the spaces or the location.

  • The service still has headroom

Out of spaces, or the load lives a floor away. The feeder and the landing are the job.

  • The feeder

The run to the new can is commercial feeders. Reusing an undersized feeder is how the new panel still cannot carry the floor.

  • The service is actually short

That increase is commercial service upgrade. Failed gear at the main is commercial panel replacement.

A subpanel is a feeder decision — sized, protected, and grounded as a subpanel, not a main

A subpanel is only as good as the feeder that reaches it and the way it is landed. The feeder is sized to the new load and the distance, and the panel is wired as a subpanel — a separated neutral and ground the main does not have.

  • Sized to load and distance

The feeder carries the new load with margin, and a long run adds a voltage-drop question. Reusing an undersized feeder is how the new panel still cannot carry the floor.

  • Neutral and ground separated

A subpanel keeps the neutral and the ground apart, with its own equipment-ground path back to the source. Bonding them at the subpanel is a common and serious miswire.

  • Because the service has room

A subpanel is the right job when the service still has capacity and you need spaces or a local disconnect where the load lives — not when the whole building is short.

When a commercial subpanel isn’t the right job

Local distribution on a service that still has headroom is this job. A short service, or only the feeder, are not.

The calculation already said the service is short

That is commercial service upgrade.

You only need the feeder discussed

That is commercial feeders.

Commercial subpanel questions

Do we need a service upgrade for more breakers?

Not if the service still has headroom. That is this job. If the service is short, that is commercial service upgrade.

Does a tenant space get its own can?

Often yes — a local disconnect and spaces where the load lives. The feeder is part of the same conversation.

Can we reuse the existing feeder?

Only if it is sized to the new load and the distance. Undersized or damaged is commercial feeders, not a hope.

The main can is damaged.

That is commercial panel replacement. A subpanel does not fix a failed service can.
