A GFCI that trips is not necessarily defective. Its job is to shut off power when it detects current leaving the intended electrical path — sometimes that means it is doing exactly what it should. Other times the device itself has failed, the circuit has lost upstream power, or a wiring problem is preventing it from resetting.
Unplug the loads, confirm the circuit has power, and try RESET once. If it will not hold, stop. Do not bypass the GFCI.
The question is not simply “Why won’t the button stay in?” It is whether the GFCI is detecting a real fault, the device has failed, or the problem is somewhere else on the circuit.
Quick answer: what a GFCI trip actually means
A ground-fault circuit interrupter compares the current leaving on the ungrounded conductor with the current returning on the neutral. Under normal conditions those values should closely match. If enough current is leaking elsewhere — through damaged equipment, moisture, a person, or another unintended path to ground — the GFCI opens the circuit quickly.
That protection matters most where electricity and water may come into contact. Common GFCI locations include bathrooms, kitchens, garages, laundry areas, crawlspaces, basements, exterior receptacles, areas near sinks, and other locations required by current electrical codes.
What “won’t reset” actually looks like
There are several different failure patterns, and they are not one generic “bad outlet.”

The RESET button will not click in. Possible causes include no power reaching the GFCI, a failed device, miswiring, an active ground fault still present, or a device that has reached end of life.
It resets, then trips immediately. Look for a connected appliance fault, moisture, damaged downstream wiring, a line-to-ground leakage path, wiring errors, or a failing GFCI.
It works for a while, then trips randomly. That pattern more often points to intermittent appliance leakage, moisture that comes and goes, deteriorated outdoor wiring, a motor or heating appliance, cumulative leakage from several devices, or a loose or damaged circuit connection.
What to check before calling
Start with the safe external checks: unplug loads, look for a controlling GFCI, confirm the circuit is energized, and reset the breaker once if conditions are safe.
- Unplug everything from the GFCI and from nearby receptacles that may be protected by it.
- Confirm the circuit feeding it still has power.
- If you know which breaker serves the GFCI and there are no signs of overheating, arcing, or burning, move that breaker fully OFF, then back ON.
- Try RESET once.
- If it will not hold, stop. Leave the loads unplugged and note what was running.
If the device stays reset with everything unplugged, it was likely reacting to a load or a downstream fault. Leave those items unplugged and tell the electrician which one was running. Do not plug appliances back in one at a time to hunt the trip. Note what was on the circuit when it opened — a refrigerator, freezer, coffee maker, toaster, hair dryer, washing machine, pressure washer, outdoor lighting transformer, fountain or pump, or garage equipment. The trip may be warning you about leakage current in that equipment.
One GFCI may protect several normal-looking outlets. Those downstream receptacles may not have TEST or RESET buttons, so a tripped GFCI in one location can make outlets elsewhere appear dead. A garage GFCI may protect an exterior receptacle; one bathroom GFCI may protect another bathroom; a kitchen GFCI may protect additional countertop receptacles. A dead outlet and a tripping GFCI can be part of the same circuit even if they are not next to each other.
If the GFCI has no power, it may not reset. The device needs incoming power to operate normally, and pressing RESET may do nothing if the circuit feeding it has lost power. Possible upstream causes include a tripped breaker, another tripped GFCI, an AFCI or dual-function breaker trip, a loose upstream connection, a failed receptacle, a damaged splice, an open hot conductor, or a panel or breaker problem. A GFCI that will not reset is not automatically a failed GFCI — first confirm that the circuit itself is energized.
A breaker can trip without looking dramatically different from its normal ON position. If the breaker immediately trips when you restore it, stop resetting it. That indicates a circuit problem that needs diagnosis.
Moisture and outdoor receptacles
GFCIs are intentionally common in wet and damp locations, so water exposure is often the first thing to consider — especially outdoors. Possible sources include rain entering an exterior receptacle, a damaged weatherproof cover, irrigation spray, condensation, a leaking sink or pipe, a wet extension cord, a damp appliance, moisture in an outdoor junction box, or water intrusion into landscape equipment. A GFCI that starts tripping after rain is giving useful information. Do not bypass the GFCI to keep the circuit operating. Find the moisture path.
An exterior receptacle can be GFCI-protected and still be vulnerable to water if the enclosure or cover is damaged or inappropriate for the installation. An electrician may need to inspect the weather-resistant receptacle, enclosure, cover, gasket, conduit entry, cable entry, and downstream outdoor equipment. If water has entered the box, simply resetting the GFCI after the surface dries may not address the underlying problem.
Appliances, cords, and leakage that trip a GFCI
A trip that follows a refrigerator, hair dryer, or damaged cord is not proof the GFCI is “too sensitive.” The device may be reacting to leakage in the equipment.
A refrigerator can trip a GFCI. Refrigerators, freezers, and similar appliances can occasionally become part of a tripping complaint. That does not prove the GFCI is too sensitive. A refrigerator contains a compressor motor, defrost heater, fan motors, wiring, and controls, and an insulation fault or leakage in one of those components can trigger ground-fault protection. Timing can provide a clue: a refrigerator that runs normally for hours but trips the GFCI during a defrost cycle may point toward a different fault than one that trips immediately when plugged in. Do not replace the GFCI with an unprotected receptacle merely to stop the symptom where GFCI protection is required.
Why appliances sometimes trip only occasionally. Some faults occur only during a particular operating mode — a heating element energizes, a compressor or pump starts, a defrost cycle begins, moisture reaches a component, a motor winding warms, or vibration moves a damaged conductor. That is why “it worked when I plugged it in” does not rule out the appliance. Intermittent trips should be correlated with what equipment was operating at the time.
Multiple appliances can contribute leakage. Electronic devices often contain filters and components that allow very small amounts of normal leakage current. One device may not be enough to trip a GFCI; several devices on the same protected circuit can sometimes contribute to the total, especially on circuits serving multiple electronic loads. That does not mean the GFCI should be removed. The circuit and connected equipment should be evaluated to determine whether there is normal cumulative leakage, one abnormal device, an inappropriate circuit arrangement, or actual wiring damage.
A damaged cord can trip the GFCI. Inspect appliance and extension cords before blaming the receptacle. Look for crushed insulation, cuts, exposed conductors, melted areas, damaged plug blades, loose cord ends, and signs of water intrusion. Outdoor extension cords are particularly vulnerable because they may be driven over, pinched under doors, cut by tools, exposed to rain, or left in wet soil. Do not tape over a seriously damaged cord and continue using it. Replace damaged equipment.
