If an outlet has no power but the breaker does not appear tripped, the problem may not be the outlet itself. Power may be interrupted at a GFCI elsewhere on the circuit, at a breaker whose handle does not look obviously off, at a wall switch, at the receptacle, at an upstream receptacle, splice, or connection, at an open hot or open neutral, at an AFCI or dual-function breaker, at a connection that overheated under a high electrical load, at wiring disturbed during recent remodeling, or at a failed breaker or panel connection.
A breaker that looks ON does not mean the circuit is intact. Check the GFCI, a full breaker reset, and nearby wall switches before assuming the outlet itself failed.
Start with the safe external checks below. If the outlet is warm, discolored, loose, buzzing, arcing, smoking, or smells burnt, stop using the circuit and have it inspected. Never plug a lamp into a dead outlet to test it.

A breaker that looks normal therefore does not rule out an electrical circuit problem.
Is it the breaker, a GFCI, an AFCI, or a wall switch?
Most dead outlets with an on-looking breaker come down to a handful of everyday causes. Work through these before assuming a wiring fault.
The breaker may be tripped even if it looks ON. Some breakers do not move all the way to the OFF position when they trip. The handle may sit near ON, rest in a middle position, or look normal at a quick glance. If the breaker serving the outlet is known and there are no signs of overheating, burning, arcing, or other damage, a normal reset procedure is:
- move the breaker firmly to OFF;
- then move it back to ON.
If it trips again immediately, do not keep resetting it. That changes the problem from “the outlet is dead” to “the circuit is detecting a fault or overload condition.” If the breaker will not stay reset, see breaker won’t reset.
A tripped GFCI can cause the dead outlet. A dead receptacle does not need TEST and RESET buttons on its face to be GFCI-protected. One upstream GFCI device can protect other receptacles downstream, so the controlling GFCI may be in the same room, in another bathroom, in the garage, outdoors, in the laundry area, near a utility sink, or elsewhere on the same branch circuit. Check accessible GFCI receptacles in bathrooms, kitchen, garage, laundry, exterior, basement, utility areas, and near sinks. Look for a device with TEST and RESET buttons.
If the device is not damaged, hot, wet, discolored, or burnt:
- unplug loads from the affected circuit where practical;
- press RESET firmly;
- verify whether power returns.

One GFCI can shut off several outlets because a GFCI receptacle can provide downstream protection through its load terminals. If that GFCI trips, every correctly connected downstream receptacle can lose power even though those outlets look like ordinary receptacles.
An AFCI or dual-function breaker may be involved. A modern circuit may be protected by AFCI, a GFCI breaker, or a dual-function AFCI/GFCI breaker. The breaker may have a TEST button, a trip indicator, or diagnostic behavior defined by the manufacturer. Do not assume breaker handle looks ON = circuit protection has not operated, and do not replace an AFCI/GFCI breaker with an ordinary breaker just to stop tripping. The dead outlet may be controlled by a wall switch. Some receptacles are intentionally switched — the entire receptacle, only the top half, only the bottom half, or a receptacle formerly used for a floor lamp. Before assuming the circuit failed, check nearby wall switches, try the normal switch positions, and note whether only half the receptacle is dead. A switched outlet can look exactly like a failed outlet when the controlling switch is not obvious.

If only one outlet is dead, the fault may be local to that receptacle, its terminations, a switched connection, or wiring inside that box. A local-looking symptom does not prove the outlet itself is the failed part.
If several outlets are dead, think upstream. Residential branch circuits often supply multiple receptacles from the same circuit. Depending on how the boxes are wired, one failed receptacle connection, splice, GFCI, hot conductor, or neutral conductor can interrupt power farther downstream.
Check what else on the circuit lost power — lights, another wall, another room, garage receptacles, exterior receptacles, bathroom outlets. The pattern often tells more than the dead outlet itself.
Can an upstream connection, open hot, or open neutral cause a dead outlet?
When the simple checks come up empty, the problem is usually a broken connection somewhere on the circuit.
An upstream outlet or loose connection can cause a dead outlet. The problem can be in a receptacle that still looks normal from the room. Depending on the circuit layout, an upstream box may contain a receptacle used as part of the current path, a splice feeding downstream outlets, a loose hot, a loose neutral, or a heat-damaged connection. If that connection opens, downstream devices can die.
A bad outlet can cause other outlets to stop working. If downstream power passes through connections at that receptacle, a failed connection there can interrupt the rest of the circuit. The failed device does not always look visibly burnt.
A loose or backstab connection can cause a dead outlet. Push-in or “backstab” connections are one possible place to investigate when a circuit has an intermittent or open connection. That does not mean every push-in connection has failed. An electrician should identify the actual open or high-resistance connection rather than assuming the wiring method is the cause.
A loose splice can cause several dead outlets. A loose or failed splice can open the hot, the neutral, or another required conductor path. That can shut off several downstream loads without tripping the breaker.
An open hot and an open neutral are different faults, and both can make a receptacle stop working. An open hot means the energized conductor is interrupted before it reaches the affected load — at a breaker connection, splice, receptacle termination, damaged conductor, or upstream device. The outlet may appear completely dead. An open neutral means the return path is interrupted. Depending on circuit arrangement and connected loads, symptoms can include dead outlets, intermittent operation, misleading tester readings, or lighting behaving abnormally.
A neutral problem is more urgent if lights in different areas become unusually bright, dim, or unstable, especially across multiple circuits.
