If an outlet has no power but the breaker does not appear tripped, the problem may not be the outlet itself. Power may be interrupted at a GFCI elsewhere on the circuit, at a breaker whose handle does not look obviously off, at a wall switch, at the receptacle, at an upstream receptacle, splice, or connection, at an open hot or open neutral, at an AFCI or dual-function breaker, at a connection that overheated under a high electrical load, at wiring disturbed during recent remodeling, or at a failed breaker or panel connection.

A breaker that looks ON does not mean the circuit is intact. Check the GFCI, a full breaker reset, and nearby wall switches before assuming the outlet itself failed.

Start with the safe external checks below. If the outlet is warm, discolored, loose, buzzing, arcing, smoking, or smells burnt, stop using the circuit and have it inspected. Never plug a lamp into a dead outlet to test it.

Quick answer: why is the outlet dead if the breaker looks on?

A dead outlet with the breaker apparently on usually means power is being interrupted somewhere between the panel and the receptacle — at a protective device, the breaker, a switch, the dead receptacle, another receptacle upstream, a splice, the hot conductor, or the neutral conductor.

A breaker that looks normal therefore does not rule out an electrical circuit problem.

Is it the breaker, a GFCI, an AFCI, or a wall switch?

Most dead outlets with an on-looking breaker come down to a handful of everyday causes. Work through these before assuming a wiring fault.

The breaker may be tripped even if it looks ON. Some breakers do not move all the way to the OFF position when they trip. The handle may sit near ON, rest in a middle position, or look normal at a quick glance. If the breaker serving the outlet is known and there are no signs of overheating, burning, arcing, or other damage, a normal reset procedure is:

  1. move the breaker firmly to OFF;
  2. then move it back to ON.

If it trips again immediately, do not keep resetting it. That changes the problem from “the outlet is dead” to “the circuit is detecting a fault or overload condition.” If the breaker will not stay reset, see breaker won’t reset.

A tripped GFCI can cause the dead outlet. A dead receptacle does not need TEST and RESET buttons on its face to be GFCI-protected. One upstream GFCI device can protect other receptacles downstream, so the controlling GFCI may be in the same room, in another bathroom, in the garage, outdoors, in the laundry area, near a utility sink, or elsewhere on the same branch circuit. Check accessible GFCI receptacles in bathrooms, kitchen, garage, laundry, exterior, basement, utility areas, and near sinks. Look for a device with TEST and RESET buttons.

If the device is not damaged, hot, wet, discolored, or burnt:

  1. unplug loads from the affected circuit where practical;
  2. press RESET firmly;
  3. verify whether power returns.

If it immediately trips again, will not reset, or feels abnormal, stop there. Do not defeat or bypass the protection. For repeated GFCI problems, see GFCI keeps tripping or won’t reset.

One GFCI can shut off several outlets because a GFCI receptacle can provide downstream protection through its load terminals. If that GFCI trips, every correctly connected downstream receptacle can lose power even though those outlets look like ordinary receptacles.

An AFCI or dual-function breaker may be involved. A modern circuit may be protected by AFCI, a GFCI breaker, or a dual-function AFCI/GFCI breaker. The breaker may have a TEST button, a trip indicator, or diagnostic behavior defined by the manufacturer. Do not assume breaker handle looks ON = circuit protection has not operated, and do not replace an AFCI/GFCI breaker with an ordinary breaker just to stop tripping. The dead outlet may be controlled by a wall switch. Some receptacles are intentionally switched — the entire receptacle, only the top half, only the bottom half, or a receptacle formerly used for a floor lamp. Before assuming the circuit failed, check nearby wall switches, try the normal switch positions, and note whether only half the receptacle is dead. A switched outlet can look exactly like a failed outlet when the controlling switch is not obvious.

If only one outlet is dead, the fault may be local to that receptacle, its terminations, a switched connection, or wiring inside that box. A local-looking symptom does not prove the outlet itself is the failed part.

If several outlets are dead, think upstream. Residential branch circuits often supply multiple receptacles from the same circuit. Depending on how the boxes are wired, one failed receptacle connection, splice, GFCI, hot conductor, or neutral conductor can interrupt power farther downstream.

Check what else on the circuit lost power — lights, another wall, another room, garage receptacles, exterior receptacles, bathroom outlets. The pattern often tells more than the dead outlet itself.

Can an upstream connection, open hot, or open neutral cause a dead outlet?

When the simple checks come up empty, the problem is usually a broken connection somewhere on the circuit.

An upstream outlet or loose connection can cause a dead outlet. The problem can be in a receptacle that still looks normal from the room. Depending on the circuit layout, an upstream box may contain a receptacle used as part of the current path, a splice feeding downstream outlets, a loose hot, a loose neutral, or a heat-damaged connection. If that connection opens, downstream devices can die.

A bad outlet can cause other outlets to stop working. If downstream power passes through connections at that receptacle, a failed connection there can interrupt the rest of the circuit. The failed device does not always look visibly burnt.

A loose or backstab connection can cause a dead outlet. Push-in or “backstab” connections are one possible place to investigate when a circuit has an intermittent or open connection. That does not mean every push-in connection has failed. An electrician should identify the actual open or high-resistance connection rather than assuming the wiring method is the cause.

A loose splice can cause several dead outlets. A loose or failed splice can open the hot, the neutral, or another required conductor path. That can shut off several downstream loads without tripping the breaker.

An open hot and an open neutral are different faults, and both can make a receptacle stop working. An open hot means the energized conductor is interrupted before it reaches the affected load — at a breaker connection, splice, receptacle termination, damaged conductor, or upstream device. The outlet may appear completely dead. An open neutral means the return path is interrupted. Depending on circuit arrangement and connected loads, symptoms can include dead outlets, intermittent operation, misleading tester readings, or lighting behaving abnormally.

A neutral problem is more urgent if lights in different areas become unusually bright, dim, or unstable, especially across multiple circuits. After a space heater, appliance, or remodel

Timing is a clue. An outlet that quit right after a specific event points at what to check first.

A space heater or high-load appliance can expose a weak connection. Examples include a space heater, portable air conditioner, vacuum, hair appliance, kitchen appliance, or other sustained or high-current load. A loose or high-resistance connection can heat under load. Eventually it may open completely, damage the receptacle, damage insulation, discolor the device, or create a burning smell. If the outlet failed during or shortly after a high-load appliance was used, do not assume replacing the receptacle alone fixes the underlying problem. The connection and surrounding wiring should be checked.

An outlet that stops working after a remodel changes the diagnostic picture. Potential causes include disturbed receptacle connections, changed splices, wiring damaged by screws or fasteners, altered switch/receptacle configuration, newly added GFCI/AFCI protection, circuit extensions, or boxes covered or moved. If the outlet failure began immediately after drywall, cabinet installation, flooring work, electrical remodeling, or switch/receptacle replacement, tell the electrician what changed and when. That history can shorten the diagnosis considerably.

When a dead outlet is dangerous

A dead outlet is more urgent when there are signs of heat or electrical damage.

Warm or hot outlet. Stop using the receptacle if it is noticeably warm or hot without an obvious normal source of heat. Possible causes include a loose connection, high resistance, a damaged receptacle, or an overloaded or failing connection.

Burning smell. Treat a burning or melting smell as a warning sign. Do not keep plugging devices into the outlet to “see if it works.”

Smoke, sparks, or arcing. If you see smoke, sparks, arcing, or active melting, move away from the equipment and de-energize the circuit only if that can be done safely. If there is active fire, call emergency services.

Loose plug or worn receptacle. A plug that falls out easily or does not grip properly can indicate worn receptacle contacts. Poor contact can create heat. CPSC and ESFI both treat loose-fitting plugs/receptacles and overheating as electrical safety concerns.

What you can check yourself

Limit homeowner troubleshooting to safe external checks: looking for a tripped GFCI, identifying the correct breaker, performing one proper breaker reset when conditions are safe, checking wall switches, checking what other loads are already dead, and noting whether the failure followed a high-load appliance or remodel.

Do not open energized receptacle boxes, panel covers, or junction boxes unless you are qualified to work on energized electrical equipment.

A non-contact voltage tester cannot diagnose a dead outlet by itself. It can sometimes indicate that an energized conductor is nearby, but it does not tell you whether the receptacle has a usable neutral, whether the circuit can carry load, whether the hot is correctly connected, whether induced/ghost voltage is present, or whether the receptacle is wired correctly. It is a screening tool, not a complete dead-outlet diagnosis.

Never plug a lamp, a tester, or a “known-good” appliance into a dead or questionable outlet. A loose connection, an open neutral, or a damaged receptacle can still be live in the wrong way. Observation is enough: what already lost power, what was already plugged in, whether anything is warm. Unplug to isolate; do not plug in to test. Do not apply loads to a receptacle that is warm, damaged, loose, discolored, buzzing, or smelling burnt. If an appliance is already known to work elsewhere and the receptacle is questionable, treat the electrical outlet as the problem until it is evaluated.

Does a dead outlet always need to be replaced?

No. Replacing the visible receptacle only solves the problem when the receptacle itself is actually defective. The real fault could instead be an upstream GFCI, the breaker, a switch, an open splice, a loose upstream device, an open hot, an open neutral, a damaged conductor, or a panel connection. This is why dead outlet ≠ automatically bad outlet. Diagnosis should identify where power stops.

How an electrician diagnoses a dead outlet. A proper diagnosis follows the circuit rather than guessing at parts. Depending on the symptoms, an electrician may check breaker state and output, AFCI/GFCI protection, voltage at the affected receptacle, neutral condition, upstream receptacles, splices, device terminations, circuit continuity with power safely isolated, panel terminations, signs of heat or arcing, and circuit layout and downstream loads.

The objective is to find the first point where the circuit stops behaving correctly. The actual repair may be to reset or replace a protective device, replace one receptacle, repair one splice, correct a loose termination, repair damaged cable, replace a faulty breaker, or correct a broader circuit problem. It is not automatically a rewire or panel project.

  1. Look for burning, heat, arcing, or damage.
  2. Check for an upstream GFCI.
  3. Reset the known breaker fully OFF and back ON once, if conditions are safe.
  4. Check nearby wall switches.
  5. Identify whether one outlet, several outlets, or lights also lost power.
  6. Note whether the failure followed a space heater, appliance, or remodel.
  7. Stop external troubleshooting if power does not return or warning signs are present.

Can an outlet go bad without tripping the breaker?

Yes. A receptacle or connection can fail open without producing enough overcurrent to trip the breaker.

Can a bad outlet cause other outlets to stop working?

Yes. If other outlets are downstream of a failed connection at that box, they can lose power too.

Can a GFCI in another room control my outlet?

Yes. One GFCI can protect downstream receptacles elsewhere on the same circuit.

Why is half of my outlet dead?

A split receptacle may have one half controlled by a wall switch, or there may be a local wiring/device problem. Do not assume both halves are supposed to be continuously energized.

Can a breaker fail without tripping?

A breaker or its connection can fail, although upstream GFCI protection, circuit connections, and other causes should also be considered. An electrician can verify whether the breaker is actually supplying the circuit.

Why are multiple outlets not working if the breaker is on?

Common possibilities include a tripped upstream GFCI, an open hot, an open neutral, a loose splice, a failed upstream receptacle, AFCI/dual-function protection, or a breaker or panel connection issue.

Is a dead outlet a fire hazard?

It can be, depending on why it failed. A clean open connection may simply leave the outlet without power, while a loose or heat-damaged connection can create a fire risk. Warmth, burning odor, discoloration, buzzing, arcing, or melting increase the urgency.

Why did my outlet stop working after a space heater?

A space heater creates a substantial sustained load and can expose a weak receptacle or connection. If the failure occurred under load, inspect the receptacle, connections, and upstream circuit rather than simply replacing the face device.

Should I replace a dead outlet myself?

Do not assume replacement is the correct repair. First determine whether the receptacle is actually the failed component and whether the circuit can be safely de-energized and verified. If the cause is upstream, replacing the dead receptacle will not restore power.
