EV-ready electrical is the path a charger needs, before you buy the unit
EV-ready work is the electrical the charger will sit on: spare capacity, a route to where the car parks, and the disconnect or outlet the unit requires. It is the right job when the charger is coming and the panel question has not been answered yet. Installing the unit itself is EV charger installation.
Capacity
Whether the service can carry a Level 2 circuit alongside what the house already draws. That whether-decision is the panel upgrade page — the answer can be no.
The route
From the panel to where the car will park. A detached garage is often a garage subpanel first.
The finish at the parking spot
A disconnect, an outlet, or a stub the charger manufacturer lists. Buying the unit first is how people buy twice.

Load management can keep a charger on a service that cannot run every load at once. It is not a 200-amp upgrade.

EV-ready electrical upgrade: utility, permits, and this job
This work often involves the utility or a permit. The address decides which office and which provider — not a generic Sacramento paragraph copied onto every service.
SMUD, PG&E, or Roseville Electric may need a disconnect or a meter appointment if the service equipment is involved.
We pull the permit for the city or county that actually covers the address.
A dimmer, a switch, or a lighting control does not get this chapter — the utility is not in that job.

Should I buy the charger first?
Easier not to. What the service can carry and where the car parks narrow the unit. This job is that path; hanging the unit is EV charger installation.
Is EV-ready the same as a panel upgrade?
No. Whether you need more capacity is the panel upgrade question. EV-ready is the circuit and the route once that answer is known — including when the answer is that you do not need a larger service.
Can load management skip this?
Sometimes. If the service is close, load management can share it. We measure before anyone sells you either.
Does a detached garage change this?
Yes. Power to a detached structure is a garage subpanel. EV-ready to that garage is the feeder and the charger circuit off it.
What does it mean when a house is EV ready?
A path exists to install a Level 2 charger: spare capacity, a route, and a listed breaker space.
Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel for an EV charger?
Sometimes. The load calculation decides. Load management can keep a charger on the existing service when capacity is the only issue.
