An outdoor kitchen is not a hot tub, and it is not a brighter floodlight. It is receptacles that have to live outside: GFCI, weather-rated, an in-use cover that actually closes over a cord — plus a 240-volt run only if the grill or pizza oven is listed for one. The question is not “Can I add an outlet on the patio?” It is what loads sit in this island — fridge, outlets, lights, a 120-volt or 240-volt grill — and how does power get there without a bubble cover that fills with water? Plan that before the stone, the stucco, and the trench are closed.
The receptacle job is outdoor outlet installation. A spa on the other side of the yard is hot tub electrical — bonding, a disconnect in sight of the water, a different listing. Do not copy that page onto a grill island.

Quick answer: what outdoor kitchen electrical actually needs
There is no single “outdoor kitchen circuit.” A gas grill with 120-volt controls is not a 50-amp spa. A 240-volt electric grill is not a range leftover 14-50 from the indoor kitchen. Read the nameplates. Then trench once.
Most Sacramento outdoor kitchens need some mix of GFCI-protected 120-volt receptacles at the island and nearby walls; weather-resistant devices and in-use covers that close over a plug; a dedicated 120-volt circuit for an outdoor refrigerator if the listing wants isolation; a 240-volt circuit only when the grill, side burner, or pizza oven nameplate calls for it; and lighting as its own layer — outdoor lighting planning, not more cans in the soffit as an afterthought.

Does an outdoor kitchen need GFCI and in-use covers?
Outdoor receptacles fail from water and from covers that only shut when nothing is plugged in. Current dwelling code wants GFCI outdoors. The device has to be listed for the location. A kitchen GFCI indoors with a cord under the door is not an outdoor kitchen.
Weather-resistant (WR) receptacles and an in-use (while-in-use) cover that closes over a plug are the listing, not a decorative bubble. Place the box where you actually plug in — blender, fridge, phone, a cord for the grill controls — not the nearest stud on the house if that stud is twenty feet of trip-hazard cord from the island. That is the pairing that matters: outdoor outlets, GFCI, covers that work.
The island is a structure, not an extension cord
Power has to reach the island. That usually means a trench or a sleeved path before hardscape, wet-location wiring methods, boxes you can still open after the stone is on, and a path that is not a surface cord across the patio. Once the counter is set, adding a circuit is demolition.
Plan receptacle locations with the millwork: fridge cutout, grill skirt, a drawer that is not a junction box. A post-mounted in-use receptacle on the back of the island is a real product. A power strip under the bar is not.
120-volt vs 240-volt — the grill decides
