Good outdoor lighting starts with the property, not the fixture catalog. The ten-second version: decide what needs to be visible after dark, where the light should come from, and how little light can do that job well — before you pick fixtures. Do that before landscaping, concrete, pavers, retaining walls, fences, patios, and exterior painting make the wiring hard to change. Solve every problem with a brighter floodlight instead and you get glare, harsh shadows, washed-out landscaping, light in neighbors’ windows, and a yard that feels less usable rather than more.

Plan in this order: identify what needs light; walk the property after dark; separate safety, task, accent, and security lighting; choose fixture positions before styles; control glare and spill; pick warm color and appropriate output; decide line-voltage vs low-voltage; plan switches, timers, sensors, and smart controls; run conduit and wiring before hardscape; confirm GFCI, grounding, and wet/damp ratings; and coordinate permits where new permanent work is involved. Don’t start by buying ten fixtures — start by drawing the nighttime use of the property.

Start with jobs, not fixtures

Walk the routes you actually use after dark — driveway to front door, garage to house, side gate, backyard, trash area, shed, patio, steps, outdoor kitchen — and note where you genuinely need to see. Then separate those areas from places that merely look dark: darkness itself is not a defect, and outdoor lighting works better when light and shadow are both intentional.

Every fixture should have one job. Safety light shows steps, level changes, paths, gates, and entries; task light supports grilling, cooking, unlocking a door, or bench work; accent light picks out a tree, wall texture, column, or architectural detail; security light reveals movement on selected approaches; and ambient light makes the space comfortable without spotlighting any one object. If one fixture is trying to do all five, it is usually too bright or badly placed.

Light the path, not the whole yard. A path needs only enough light to read direction, edges, steps, and hazards — low-level path lights usually beat one powerful house-mounted fixture because they cut glare, deep shadows, and spill. DarkSky’s residential guidance recommends low output for pathways and using only the light actually needed; the goal is not to make the yard look like daytime.

Put entry light where it helps the person at the door. Front-door lighting should show the face, the lock, the step, and the address where appropriate. A single bright fixture directly above eye level makes facial visibility worse through glare and hard shadows, so two wall sconces, a shielded downlight, a porch ceiling light, or low-level step lighting usually work better — think about what someone standing at the door can actually see.

Brightness is not security. Very bright lighting creates glare, deep contrast just outside the lit zone, and uncomfortable conditions next door; a flood pointed outward can make it harder to see beyond the lit area. Security lighting works better targeted, controlled, properly aimed, and paired with motion detection where useful. Use motion selectively — it suits a side yard, driveway, gate, utility area, or garage approach, but a patio that flips between dark and bright every time someone shifts is not comfortable ambient light. DarkSky recommends timers and occupancy/motion controls so lighting runs only when needed: a common pattern is exterior lighting on at sunset, accent lighting dimming or off later in the evening, and only necessary security or entry light overnight.

Color temperature, glare, and aiming

Residential exterior lighting looks better warm — 2200K, 2700K, or 3000K — while higher color temperatures feel colder, harsher, and more commercial. DarkSky recommends warm outdoor light, generally 3000K or lower and often 2700K or below; for most Sacramento homes, 2700K is a strong default. Avoid mixing temperatures randomly (2700K sconces beside a 5000K security flood, 3000K path lights, and a blue-white garage light look disorganized) — pick a palette, roughly 2700K for general and architectural light and 2700–3000K for security or task, and keep it consistent.

Shield the source. A good fixture puts light where it is needed without exposing the bright source to neighbors, drivers, or people sitting nearby, so look for full-cutoff, shielded downlights, a recessed source, or a controlled beam — DarkSky’s principles emphasize directing light only where needed and avoiding spill. The fixture can be bright; the viewer just should not have to stare into the bright part. Aim after dark, not on installation day — a fixture that looks right at noon can throw window glare, reflected glare, or light trespass at night, so check the view from the sidewalk, street, neighbor-facing property line, bedroom windows, and patio seating, where small aiming changes make a large difference.

Skip the “wall of floodlights.” Bright floods at every corner are easy and rarely good design, giving flat illumination, glare, hard shadows, and over-lighting; multiple lower-output layers — an entry sconce, path lights, a patio downlight, one targeted motion light — feel safer and more comfortable than four powerful floods. Part of the design is deciding what stays dark: an unused lawn, a rear fence, a distant planting bed, or a tree canopy can stay unlit for depth, contrast, lower energy use, and less spill. Darkness makes the illuminated features stand out.

How should fixtures be placed by area?

Landscape lighting has to plan for plants that grow. Don’t aim a fixture only for today’s plant size — a small uplight beside a young tree gets blocked, swallowed by foliage, or buried in mulch within a few years, so plan for mature size, irrigation, pruning, and service access. Keep fixtures out of constant irrigation spray too: outdoor-rated does not mean built to sit in a sprinkler stream nightly, so locate them around heads, drainage, low spots, mulch, and soil movement.

Use uplighting as accent, downlighting for general feel. Uplighting suits mature trees, textured walls, columns, and architectural features, but too much creates glare, sky glow, and theatrical over-lighting — if a tree needs two subtle fixtures, don’t install six. Downlighting from eaves, structures, or well-placed tree mounts imitates natural light and works well for paths, patios, and planting areas, shielded and aimed so the viewer sees the lit surface, not the source.

Match the fixture to how the area is used. Patio lighting has to be comfortable at eye level because people sit — a fixture that seems fine standing can glare from a chair, so check the seated sightline and favor low-output wall lights, indirect light, downlights, under-counter light, step lights, or carefully controlled string lighting. Outdoor kitchens need task light on the grill surface, counter, sink, and prep area, placed above or from the front and side so the cook’s body doesn’t block it, and coordinated with outdoor receptacles, a refrigerator, grill ignition, and other appliances. Step lighting should reveal the change in elevation — recessed step lights, low wall lights, or downlights from a railing — not make each stair glow or shine up into the eyes. Driveway lighting should define garage-entry visibility, a pedestrian path, and the address with shielded wall lights, bollards, and selective motion, keeping light off neighboring windows, the street, and drivers’ eyes. Address lighting only works if it is readable from the sidewalk, street, and driveway approach — a beautiful number light invisible from the street has failed.

Permanent roofline lighting is its own system. Permanent architectural LED runs can be part of the plan as accent lighting, but not a substitute for pathway, task, entry, or security light, and they need a planned controller location, power supply, outdoor rating, service access, and sensible nighttime brightness, color, and schedules — this is different from seasonal Christmas lights. A permanent RGB system can display bright colors, animation, and high intensity, but for everyday architectural use, warm white, lower brightness, controlled downward light, and a timed shutoff give a more residential result.

Line voltage, low voltage, and GFCI

Outdoor lighting uses two electrical architectures, and they work together. Low-voltage landscape lighting uses a transformer to drop household voltage for paths, landscape accents, trees, and planting beds; it makes fixtures easy to relocate and the field wiring lower-voltage. Line-voltage lighting uses normal building voltage for wall sconces, porch lights, floods, permanent building-mounted fixtures, and some bollards, and needs conventional wiring methods and protection. Don’t default to “low voltage everywhere” — it is excellent for landscaping but not automatically right for a building-mounted wall light, a large area light, a patio ceiling fixture, or permanent architectural light. Choose by function.

A low-voltage system needs its transformer in an accessible, weather-appropriate location with a receptacle, circuit, controls, and room for future expansion — don’t bury it behind permanent landscaping where no one can service it. Leave reasonable spare capacity in the transformer and cable layout for later tree, path, or patio additions without dramatically oversizing. Watch voltage drop on long runs: distant fixtures dim or read inconsistently, so a good design accounts for cable length, conductor size, fixture load, and transformer taps rather than turning every fixture brighter to compensate.

Line-voltage exterior wiring faces rain, soil, UV, physical damage, and temperature swings, so it needs weatherproof boxes, wet-location fittings, outdoor-rated conductors, and appropriate underground methods or conduit — “under an eave” does not make every component an indoor location. Match the fixture listing to the exposure: damp-location equipment suits places with moisture or condensation but limited direct water, such as many covered porch ceilings; wet-location equipment is required where rain and weather hit directly, such as an exposed wall or open pergola. Don’t choose by style alone.

Outdoor receptacles need GFCI protection — ESFI lists them among the locations that require it — which matters when lighting uses a plug-in transformer, decorative lighting, or patio equipment. Don’t defeat a GFCI that trips repeatedly; find the moisture or equipment fault. And treat “outdoor power” as several decisions, not one generic circuit: a landscape transformer may plug into a GFCI receptacle, a building-mounted fixture may be hardwired, and an outdoor kitchen may need multiple appliance and receptacle circuits, so plan the loads separately.

Controls and zones

Decide controls before rough-in. Outdoor lighting can run off a wall switch, photocell, astronomical timer, motion sensor, smart switch, home automation, or a low-voltage transformer timer, and the useful move is more zones rather than more fixtures — a property becomes far more usable when entry, path, patio, landscape, and security lights can be controlled in layers instead of one switch running every exterior light. A photocell handles dusk-to-dawn logic well for an entry, address, or low-level security light, while an astronomical timer gives decorative landscape lighting a sunset-on, set-hour-off schedule so it isn’t left burning until sunrise.

Smart controls add sunset schedules, dimming, remote control, and vacation modes, but critical entry and safety lighting should still behave sensibly if the Wi-Fi fails, the app changes, or the house is sold — turning on the porch light should never depend on finding a phone. If cameras are planned, coordinate fixture location, beam direction, and motion activation so light helps the camera see the subject rather than sitting in frame, creating glare, or overexposing faces.

Sequence and coordination

Most of what goes wrong outdoors is a sequencing problem. Before landscaping, mark the transformer, cable routes, sleeves under paths, fixture locations, and tree locations; if pavers or concrete are going in, add sleeves before the hardscape sets, because a $20 sleeve during construction prevents cutting concrete, boring, or surface conduit later. Run conduit before concrete wherever future line-voltage lighting is plausible and later access would be expensive — a patio edge, gate, detached structure, outdoor kitchen, driveway columns, a future spa zone — without blindly trenching everywhere.

Coordinate with the rest of the yard. Landscape cable and irrigation share the same ground, so plan both so sprinkler repairs don’t keep cutting lighting cable, fixtures aren’t sprayed directly, and valve boxes stay accessible — the landscape drawing should show both systems. Keep fixtures and junctions out of low points, drainage swales, and areas that flood: a product can be wet-rated and still fail in a bad location, and avoiding standing water beats trusting a seal forever. Tree-mounted lighting needs long-term thought because trees grow — the install must avoid damaging the tree, constricting growth, creating unsafe wiring, or making service impossible, which is work for people who understand both lighting and tree care, not ordinary cable stapled to a trunk. And check that no fixture — yours or a side-wall security light — shines into your own or a neighbor’s bedroom window; shielding or a different angle usually fixes it without losing useful light.

Sacramento’s own conditions shape the plan. Long dry-season evenings mean patios get used for dining, sitting, cooking, and entertaining, which argues for comfortable layered light — task, ambient, and accent, designed like a room — rather than a single oversized flood. Winter rain, irrigation, and condensation still reach the equipment, so select fixtures, boxes, connectors, and wiring for the real exposure rather than treating a dry summer install as proof of weatherproofing. Dust, pollen, insects, and wildfire-season debris accumulate, so choose fixtures that can be cleaned, serviced, and relamped, and design in maintenance access from the start — a fixture 25 feet up a tree looks good until its driver needs replacing. Finally, keep accent lighting selective: if every tree, column, wall, and hedge is lit, nothing feels special, so choose a few visual anchors and, for expensive or highly visible fixtures, mock up position, beam, brightness, and color after dark before trenching. Moving a fixture before hardscape is easy; moving it after is not.

Permits and historic properties

Whether an outdoor lighting project needs a permit depends on the electrical scope. The City of Sacramento requires permits for work on electrical systems generally, and while a straight replacement of an existing fixture is a small scope, adding new permanent exterior wiring, adding circuits, trenching conductors, installing building-mounted fixtures where none existed, or adding outdoor-kitchen electrical systems is not — confirm the permit path before installation, since work started before a required permit can draw a penalty fee. Historic properties carry extra review for visible exterior equipment; the City’s residential permit forms include a specific form for HVAC, electrical, and solar equipment on historic properties, so if the home is historic, in a preservation district, or architecturally regulated, check those requirements before adding visible conduit, exterior boxes, or prominent fixtures.

A practical plan for a Sacramento house

A workable system rarely uses identical fixtures everywhere. Out front, a warm shielded porch light, low-level path lights, an illuminated address, and a motion light at the driveway or side access. Down the side yard, a motion-controlled shielded light and a gate light, with no decorative lighting unless the area is used. On the back patio, warm dimmable sconces or downlights, task light at the grill, and low-level step lighting. In the landscape, a few tree or accent lights and no blanket floodlighting. And on controls, put the entry on a dusk-to-late-night timer, landscape on sunset to 10–11 PM, the patio on a manual dimmer, and security on motion.
