An outdoor inlet for a portable generator — not a dryer-outlet workaround

A generator inlet is the outdoor connection. It is useless without a legal way to keep the utility and the generator from backfeeding each other. The inlet, the interlock or transfer switch, and the cord rating are one system.

  • The connection

A listed inlet, placed so the cord reaches without a walkway hazard. A dryer receptacle used as a generator tap is not this job — and it is not safe.

  • The interlock

On many residential panels a listed kit keeps the main and the generator breaker from being on together. That is generator interlock.

  • A transfer switch instead

Selected circuits, or a standby unit that should start itself, is transfer switch. The family overview is backup power.

A generator inlet does nothing without a legal transfer behind it

An inlet box is the outdoor connection where the generator cord lands, but it is only safe with an interlock or a transfer switch behind it. The inlet, the transfer method, and the cord rating are one system, sized to the generator you actually own.

  • Sized to the cord and the set

The inlet, its breaker, and the cord are rated for the generator’s output. An oversized inlet on an undersized cord, or the reverse, is a connection that fails under load.

  • A legal transfer behind it

The inlet feeds an interlock or a transfer switch — never straight into the panel. Without one, the connection can backfeed the utility, which is the danger the whole setup is meant to remove.

  • Located for the cord run

Where the inlet mounts is decided by where the generator will sit and how far the cord reaches — not by the nearest stud.

When a generator inlet isn’t the right job

The outdoor connection for a portable generator is this job. The interlock on the panel, or a transfer switch for named circuits, are not.

You need the mechanical interlock on the panel

That is generator interlock. The inlet still belongs with it.

You want selected circuits or an automatic transfer

That is transfer switch.

Generator inlet questions

Can I just use the dryer outlet?

No. A dryer receptacle is not a generator inlet. Back-feeding the house through one is dangerous for you and for anyone on the lines. This job is a listed inlet plus a legal transfer method.

Do I still need an interlock?

Yes, or a transfer switch. The inlet alone does not keep the utility and the generator apart. A listed kit is generator interlock.

When is a transfer switch the better answer?

When you want a defined set of circuits, or automatic transfer for a standby unit. That is transfer switch.

Where should the inlet go?

Where the generator actually sits and the cord does not cross a walkway. We look at the panel location and the outdoor path before anyone cuts a hole.

Do I need a permit to install a generator inlet?

An inlet with an interlock or a transfer switch is permitted work. We pull it.

Can you put a generator inlet in a garage?

If the listing, the exhaust path, and the inspector allow that wall. We site the inlet so the cord does not run through a doorway people use.
