Data room power: dedicated circuits for racks — not the hallway lighting, and not a vacuum on the same breaker

A data room is a dedicated load with a cooling and a power path. Sharing it with general office receptacles is how a vacuum cleaner takes down a switch. The circuits, the UPS landing, and the air are scoped together even when the UPS itself is furnished by others.

  • The room in the TI

An IDF, MDF, or small data room created with the suite. The TI umbrella is tenant improvement electrical.

  • Critical power for the racks

Emergency or standby distribution for that room is server room power. The UPS landing is UPS connections.

  • Not hallway lighting

The room does not share a circuit with the corridor or a convenience receptacle.

Data room power: rack circuits, the grounding busbar, and a path built for the density

The build is what separates a data room from a closet with an outlet: dedicated circuits sized to each rack, a real telecom ground, and a route from the panel that leaves room for the next rack.

  • Circuits sized to the rack

A light IDF may live on 20-amp 120-volt whips; a dense rack wants 208-volt and its own home run. Guessing low is how the second rack has nowhere to land.

  • A telecom ground, not an afterthought

Racks and cable tray are bonded to a grounding busbar, not clipped to the nearest conduit. That bonding is part of the build, and inspectors look for it.

  • Room to grow

Spare panel capacity and conduit fill are decided now — a data room that is full on day one is a callback, not a finish.

When data-room power isn’t the right job

Creating dedicated power for a data or IDF room is this job. Keeping racks on through an outage, or landing a UPS, are not.

The building already has a server room that has to stay on

That is server room power.

The UPS needs a landing

That is UPS connections.

Data room power questions

Can it share the office receptacles?

No. Sharing it with general office load is how a vacuum cleaner takes down a switch. Dedicated circuits are the point.

Is this the same as server room power?

No. This job is the room in the suite — circuits and a path. Keeping racks on through an outage is server room power.

The UPS is furnished by others.

The landing is still electrical. That connection is UPS connections.

This is part of a TI.

The date and the drawings are tenant improvement electrical. This job is the data room on that set.
