Commercial EV load management: share a commercial service across a row of chargers — not a residential gadget, not a default service increase

Commercial EV load management is how several chargers share a feeder or a service. It is the alternative to a service increase when the calculation is close. It is not a residential dynamic-load gadget copied onto a garage.

Automatic load management meters the service and throttles the chargers to fit it

Sharing a service is not splitting it evenly. A listed automatic load-management system measures what the building and the chargers actually draw and throttles the chargers in real time so the feeder is never overrun — which is how a row of stalls fits a service that could not host them at full output.

  • Measured, not assumed

The system reads current at the service or the feeder and allocates what is left to the chargers. That live measurement is what lets it claim capacity a static calculation would forbid.

  • Listed as an EMS

An energy-management system used to size the feeder has to be listed for it. A cobbled-together throttle the code will not recognize does not reduce the calculated load.

  • The tap point

Where the system senses and controls — main, feeder, or panel — decides what it can protect. Put it in the wrong place and it manages the wrong load.

When commercial EV load management isn’t the right job

Chargers sharing a service is this job. Building-wide HVAC and process shedding, or hanging the stalls, are not.

The workplace stalls are the job and the service is not the question yet

That is workplace EV charging.

HVAC and process have to shed too

That is commercial load management.

Commercial EV load management questions

Can we copy a home load-management gadget?

No — a single-charger home device does not scale to several chargers sharing one commercial feeder. This is feeder-level management, engineered to the service.

We still need the stalls designed.

The stalls are workplace EV charging. This job is how they share the service.

Do we have to upgrade the service?

Not as a default. This job exists so the building does not buy a commercial service upgrade it does not need. If the calculation is short, that page is next.

Charging is only one of the large loads.

Then start at commercial load management. EV sharing is one case. HVAC and process are others.

What is EV load management?

Sharing limited service capacity across several chargers so the building service can handle them running simultaneously.
