Not every appliance needs its own breaker. Many large appliances either require their own branch circuit by code or equipment instructions, are normally installed on an individual circuit because of their electrical load, or are worth separating so another appliance cannot trip the circuit and shut them off. Those are three different reasons, and that distinction matters because online lists often oversimplify the answer.

A refrigerator is not electrically the same as an electric range. A dishwasher is not automatically the same circuit requirement in every installation. And the right circuit for an air conditioner cannot be chosen from a generic appliance chart — it comes from the actual equipment nameplate. The useful question is: What circuit does this specific appliance require, and what else — if anything — is allowed to share it? For Sacramento homes, the answer comes from the current California Electrical Code, the appliance manufacturer’s instructions, and the actual electrical load.

These are the appliances and loads most commonly planned on their own circuits:

  • an electric range, cooktop, or wall oven
  • an electric clothes dryer
  • an electric or heat-pump water heater
  • a central air conditioner, heat pump, furnace, or air handler
  • a Level 2 EV charger
  • a hot tub, spa, or sauna
  • a large fixed electric heater
  • many built-in microwaves, dishwashers, and garbage disposals
  • certain refrigerators or freezers, large window or through-wall air conditioners, and fixed motor loads such as pumps

But the phrase “dedicated circuit” needs some precision. Some of these loads have clear individual-circuit requirements. For others, the answer depends on equipment rating, installation instructions, circuit calculation, and what other loads share the circuit.

What is a dedicated circuit?

A dedicated circuit is commonly understood as a branch circuit intended for one appliance or specific piece of equipment. It typically has its own breaker, conductors sized for that circuit, and one intended appliance or load. Electrical codes more formally use terms such as individual branch circuit. The advantage is straightforward: the appliance does not have to share available circuit capacity with unrelated loads. This matters most for equipment that draws a lot of current, runs for long periods, contains heating elements, has a motor with startup current, or would be inconvenient or unsafe to lose power unexpectedly.

Dedicated circuit does not always mean one receptacle. A common misconception is that dedicated circuit equals one outlet. Not necessarily. Some code-required branch circuits serve a defined group of outlets rather than one appliance. Examples in current Sacramento residential requirements include kitchen small-appliance circuits, laundry receptacle circuits, bathroom receptacle circuits, and garage receptacle circuits. Those circuits are reserved for specific areas or functions and cannot simply serve unrelated outlets elsewhere. That is different from an individual circuit serving one electric dryer or one EV charger.

Sacramento currently requires specific residential branch circuits

The City of Sacramento’s current residential electrical requirements, based on the 2025 California Electrical Code, specifically call for area-specific circuits that “dedicated circuit” discussions often skip while focusing only on big appliances.

Kitchen small-appliance circuits. At least two 20-amp small-appliance branch circuits for kitchen, pantry, breakfast, dining, and similar receptacle loads. These circuits are not general-purpose house circuits. They are dedicated-use kitchen circuits, not necessarily dedicated to one toaster, coffee maker, or blender. Multiple countertop appliances can use those circuits subject to normal load limits. Fixed major appliances are then planned separately as required.

Laundry circuit. At least one 20-amp branch circuit for laundry receptacle outlets. The City states that this circuit shall have no other outlets. That required 20A laundry branch circuit is intended for laundry receptacle outlets and should not be confused with the dedicated 240V circuit used by a conventional electric dryer. A laundry room can therefore have a 20A laundry receptacle circuit, an electric dryer circuit, and additional equipment circuits as needed.

Bathroom receptacle circuit. At least one 120V, 20A branch circuit for bathroom receptacle outlets and applicable countertop/work-surface outlets. That is not the same as saying every hair dryer needs a dedicated breaker. It means bathroom receptacle loads receive their own required branch-circuit arrangement. Specialty loads such as a heated floor, bidet, or heater/fan unit may then need additional planning.

Garage receptacle circuit. At least one 120V, 20A branch circuit for garage receptacle outlets.

Cooking, laundry, and water-heater circuits

These are the large cooking, laundry, and water-heating loads that are normally supplied by their own circuits.

Electric ranges usually need their own 240V circuit. An electric range is one of the largest normal residential loads, combining oven heating elements, cooktop elements, and controls. Typical electric range circuits may be 40A, 50A, or another size required by the equipment. Do not choose the breaker based on a generic article. Use the appliance nameplate, manufacturer installation instructions, and applicable load calculation. A conventional freestanding electric range is normally supplied by its own appropriately sized 120/240V branch circuit.

California also plans specifically for electric cooking. The current California Electrical Code incorporates state energy-readiness requirements for electric cooking. For applicable residential construction, California requires designated or dedicated electrical capacity for electric cooktops under the California Energy Code (Title 24, Part 6) electric-ready provisions. That reflects the broader shift toward electrification. For an existing Sacramento remodel, appliance selection still determines the actual circuit required.

Electric cooktops commonly need an individual circuit. A built-in electric or induction cooktop is normally a substantial 240V load. The required circuit depends on the unit, and possible ratings vary widely. Do not assume induction cooktop equals 40A, or that a cooktop uses the same circuit as every wall oven, without checking the actual products and permitted load calculation. Some kitchen designs can use allowed combinations under applicable rules; others require separate circuits. Final design should be based on the exact cooktop and oven.

Wall ovens commonly need their own circuit. Wall ovens can be single, double, combination oven/microwave, steam-assisted, or other configurations, and their electrical loads vary substantially. A wall oven may require 240V, dedicated overcurrent protection, and manufacturer-specified conductor sizing. Do not rough-in the circuit before the appliance is selected unless the design intentionally allows for the expected worst-case load. Changing from one wall oven to a larger double oven late in a remodel can change the electrical scope.

Electric clothes dryers use a dedicated 240V circuit. A conventional electric dryer combines electric heating elements and a motor, so it is a substantial load. A typical modern residential electric dryer uses a 240V circuit, commonly 30A, but the actual appliance requirements control. California’s current electrical and energy provisions also include dedicated-circuit readiness for electric clothes dryers in applicable residential construction. A gas dryer is different: it may only need a normal 120V receptacle for motor, controls, and ignition. So “dryer circuit” depends on dryer type.

Washing machines use the laundry branch circuit. The current Sacramento residential requirements call for a dedicated-use 20A laundry branch circuit for the laundry receptacle outlet or outlets. That circuit cannot simply be extended into another room for unrelated receptacles. This does not necessarily mean one washer equals one outlet equals one circuit in every configuration. It means the laundry receptacle circuit is reserved for the laundry area as required by the applicable rules. If the laundry also contains a gas dryer, iron, utility equipment, or other allowed laundry loads, the circuit design should be checked as part of the room layout.

Electric water heaters need appropriately sized individual circuits. A conventional electric tank water heater is normally a fixed heating load, and the branch circuit is sized from the equipment requirements. Common residential models may use a 240V circuit. Heat-pump water heaters can have very different electrical requirements depending on compressor, backup resistance elements, and model. California’s current code also includes electrical-readiness provisions for heat-pump water heaters. Do not assume that replacing a gas water heater with a heat-pump model is a simple plug-in project. Check the circuit, panel capacity, breaker space, and equipment requirements.

Electric tankless water heaters can require very large circuits. Unlike a tank heater that heats stored water over time, an electric tankless unit may need enormous instantaneous electrical power. Some whole-house models require multiple 240V circuits, a very large combined load, and substantial service capacity. This can turn a water-heater replacement into multiple new circuits, panel work, and a service-capacity review. Never select a whole-house electric tankless heater before checking the electrical requirements.

HVAC, EV charger, spa, and sauna circuits

These equipment circuits are sized from the nameplate. They should not share a convenience receptacle circuit.

Central air conditioners and heat pumps need equipment-specific circuits. HVAC circuits should be designed from the equipment nameplate. For air-conditioning and heat-pump equipment, the nameplate commonly provides values such as minimum circuit ampacity and maximum overcurrent protection. The City of Sacramento’s current electrical requirements specifically instruct installers to follow those values for air conditioners and heat pumps. That means you should not choose HVAC breaker size by looking at another home’s system. Two similarly sized outdoor units can have different electrical requirements.

Furnaces and air handlers commonly receive their own branch circuit. Central heating equipment is typically supplied by its own branch circuit arrangement. The actual requirements depend on the furnace, air handler, heat pump system, electric resistance backup heat, and controls. Electric heat strips can dramatically increase the load. A heat pump with resistance auxiliary heat is therefore a different electrical project from a small gas furnace blower.

Level 2 EV chargers use dedicated charging circuits. A hardwired Level 2 EV charger is normally supplied by its own branch circuit. Common charging configurations include outputs such as 16A, 24A, 32A, 40A, and 48A. Because EV charging can operate continuously for several hours, circuit sizing must account for continuous-load requirements. A common relationship is 32A charging on a 40A circuit, 40A charging on a 50A circuit, and 48A charging on a 60A circuit. The correct value depends on the charger and installation. A Sacramento home does not automatically need 200A service just because an EV charger is added. The service load should be calculated first.

Sacramento treats new EV charger circuits differently. The City currently lists ordinary new residential electrical circuits as minor-permit work, but specifically states that new EV charger circuits require plan-review submittal. So an EV charging circuit should be planned as more than “add one breaker.” The project can involve load calculation, circuit sizing, charger configuration, panel capacity, and permitting.

Hot tubs and spas need purpose-designed electrical circuits. Hot tubs and spas combine large electrical loads, water, motors, and heaters. They require specific electrical planning, including branch-circuit sizing, GFCI protection, disconnect requirements, bonding, and equipment placement. They should not share a convenience receptacle circuit. The actual circuit size depends on the equipment.

Saunas often need dedicated electrical circuits. Electric sauna heaters can be substantial 240V loads. The required circuit depends on heater output, sauna size, controls, and manufacturer requirements. Larger heaters can require significant amperage. The sauna should be selected before panel planning, circuit rough-in, and service calculation. A generic “sauna circuit” size is not useful.

Match the circuit to the appliance

Send the appliance nameplate or model, where it will sit, and a photo of the panel with the door open. Sharing is the exception, not the default.

Kitchen, refrigeration, and other household loads

Some of these appliances need an individual circuit by listing or load. Others are separated so an unrelated trip does not shut them off.

Built-in microwaves often need their own circuit. A built-in or over-the-range microwave can draw substantial current, and many manufacturers specify an individual or dedicated circuit. This is where appliance-specific instructions matter. A countertop microwave is often used on one of the kitchen small-appliance circuits; a fixed over-the-range microwave may have a different installation requirement. Do not assume every microwave has the same electrical design.

Does a dishwasher need a dedicated circuit? Often, but the exact answer depends on the appliance and installation. A dishwasher includes a motor, controls, and a heating element, and many installations use a separate circuit. But do not state categorically that every dishwasher in every house must always have one individual breaker without checking current code, installation instructions, and other permitted loads. The manufacturer’s electrical instructions are part of the design.

Does a garbage disposal need its own circuit? Sometimes. A garbage disposal contains a motor with startup current. Common residential designs include a separate disposal circuit, or a permitted circuit arrangement with other kitchen equipment where allowed and correctly calculated. Check the motor rating, manufacturer instructions, and branch-circuit load. A disposal should not simply be connected to whichever nearby outlet has power.

Can a dishwasher and garbage disposal share a circuit? In some properly designed installations, they may be able to share an appropriately sized circuit. In others, equipment instructions or load calculations lead to separate circuits. This is why a kitchen remodel should be designed around the actual appliance schedule. Do not install one generic “dishwasher/disposal circuit” before confirming appliance ratings, manufacturer requirements, and applicable code.

Does a refrigerator need its own dedicated circuit? This is one of the most commonly oversimplified questions. A refrigerator is often placed on a separate circuit because compressor startup adds load, continuous operation is important, an unrelated trip can spoil food, and appliance instructions may specify a separate circuit. But a refrigerator is not automatically a universal one-appliance-one-breaker requirement in every residential configuration. Check the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Even when a separate circuit is not strictly required for the specific installation, it can be a strong reliability choice.

Freezers often benefit from their own circuit. A freezer is similar, and the primary reason for separating it is often reliability. If a freezer shares a garage receptacle circuit with power tools, a vacuum, or a portable heater, an unrelated overload can shut the freezer off without anyone noticing. A separate circuit can reduce that risk. Whether it is mandatory depends on the actual installation and equipment requirements.

Window air conditioners may need a dedicated circuit. A small window AC unit may operate on an existing receptacle circuit if the manufacturer permits it, the circuit has adequate capacity, and other loads are limited. A larger unit may require a dedicated 120V circuit, a 240V circuit, or a specific receptacle. Check the unit nameplate and instructions. Repeated breaker trips are evidence that the existing circuit arrangement may not be adequate.

Portable air conditioners do not automatically need a new circuit. A portable AC is plug-connected equipment. Whether it needs a dedicated circuit depends on electrical load, circuit rating, other connected loads, and appliance instructions. If it repeatedly trips a bedroom circuit while other devices are running, the solution may be to reduce other loads or add a dedicated circuit. Do not increase breaker size on the existing wiring to keep the AC running.

Space heaters can overload shared circuits. Portable space heaters are a common cause of branch-circuit overload. They often draw close to the practical capacity of a standard receptacle circuit when used at high output. That does not mean every portable heater must have a newly installed dedicated circuit. It means avoid sharing with other high-load devices, do not use undersized extension cords, stop if outlets or plugs become hot, and consider a dedicated circuit if the heater is part of regular room use. Permanent electric heating equipment has its own design requirements.

Sump pumps and water pumps often deserve separate circuits. Pumps combine motor startup, importance during an emergency, and possible unattended operation. A sump pump losing power because someone plugged a heater into the same circuit defeats its purpose. Separate circuits are often used for reliability and equipment requirements. The actual circuit is based on the pump nameplate and installation.

Garage door openers don’t always need their own circuit. Garage door openers are commonly installed on garage electrical systems, but they are not universally one-breaker-per-opener appliances. The current Sacramento residential requirements already call for at least one 20A garage receptacle branch circuit. Whether the opener shares an allowed circuit or receives its own circuit depends on design, load, local requirements, and equipment instructions. Large workshop loads should not be casually added to the same circuit.

Workshop tools may need dedicated circuits. A workshop can quickly exceed general garage wiring. Equipment that may justify separate circuits includes a table saw, air compressor, dust collector, welder, large stationary tools, and an EV charger. Motor startup and simultaneous use matter. A woodworking shop using a table saw, dust collector, and compressor is not the same electrical load as a garage with one cordless-tool charger. Plan the circuit layout around how tools will actually operate together.

Home offices do not normally need a dedicated circuit — but sometimes benefit from one. Computers and monitors are relatively modest loads compared with electric heating equipment. But a large home office may contain a workstation, multiple monitors, networking, servers, a laser printer, a UPS, and audio equipment. A separate circuit can improve reliability and prevent unrelated household loads from tripping the office. It can also simplify surge and backup-power planning. This is usually a design choice rather than a universal appliance requirement.

Appliances that usually do not need their own circuit. Typical low-load devices can normally share general-purpose circuits when the total load is appropriate — lamps, phone chargers, televisions, small electronics, small fans, and clocks. That does not mean unlimited devices can be added. The total circuit load still matters.

How do you know whether an appliance needs a dedicated circuit?

Use this sequence.

  1. Read the appliance installation manual. Look for phrases such as separate circuit, individual branch circuit, dedicated circuit, minimum circuit ampacity, and maximum fuse or breaker size.
  2. Read the nameplate. Check voltage, amperage, wattage, and MCA/MOCP where applicable.
  3. Identify the existing circuit. Determine breaker size, conductor size, and other loads.
  4. Check applicable California requirements. Area-specific circuits and equipment requirements may apply.
  5. Calculate the load. Do not rely on breaker-handle arithmetic.

How can you tell if an appliance already has a dedicated circuit? Start at the panel. Look for labels such as RANGE, DRYER, WATER HEATER, AC, FURNACE, MICROWAVE, DISHWASHER, or EV — but panel labels are not always accurate. A proper verification can include switching the breaker off, confirming what equipment loses power, and determining whether unrelated outlets also go dead. Do not remove the panel cover to trace wiring yourself.

What if two appliances are already sharing a circuit? That is not automatically wrong. The real questions are whether the circuit is allowed to serve both, whether the combined calculated load fits, whether the manufacturers permit the arrangement, and whether the circuit meets current requirements for the work being done. If the circuit trips when both appliances operate, that is clear evidence the existing arrangement needs attention.

Repeated breaker trips are not solved by a larger breaker. This is one of the most important points in dedicated-circuit planning. Suppose a microwave and toaster trip a 20A kitchen circuit. The solution is not automatically replacing the 20A breaker with a 30A breaker. The conductors and devices are designed for specific ratings, and a larger breaker can leave the wiring under-protected. The correct solution may be to move load, add a circuit, correct wiring, or replace a faulty appliance.

New appliance, old Sacramento home. This is where dedicated-circuit projects often begin. An older house may have been designed around a gas range, gas dryer, gas water heater, no EV, and fewer kitchen appliances. Then the homeowner adds an induction range, heat-pump water heater, electric dryer, or EV charger. Each new load can require a new branch circuit, and the combined loads may also justify a service-capacity calculation. Do not plan each appliance in isolation if several electrification projects are coming.

Does adding a dedicated circuit mean you need a panel upgrade?

No. A new circuit requires two separate checks. Breaker space: is there a physical location for the breaker? Electrical capacity: can the service support the added load? A panel can have available capacity but no breaker space, or open breaker spaces but insufficient service capacity. Those are different problems. Possible solutions may include a new circuit only, a subpanel, panel replacement at the same service size, load management, or a service upgrade. Do not assume every new appliance requires a 200A upgrade.

Does a dedicated circuit require a permit in Sacramento? Yes, when a new electrical circuit is being installed. The City of Sacramento currently lists a new electrical circuit as residential electrical minor-permit work. Minor permits generally do not require conventional construction plans; code compliance is reviewed in the field. The City specifically treats new EV charger circuits differently: those require plan-review submittal. That means a new microwave or appliance circuit and a new EV charging circuit may not follow exactly the same permit path.

Which appliances are worth planning for during a remodel?

Before a kitchen, laundry, garage, or whole-house remodel, identify every fixed appliance. Do this before rough electrical. Changing appliance type after drywall can create expensive rework.

In the kitchen, plan the refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, disposal, range, cooktop, wall oven, wine refrigerator, and other fixed appliances. In the laundry, plan the washer, electric dryer, heat-pump dryer, and utility equipment. For mechanical, plan the heat pump, air handler, water heater, and whole-house fan. In the garage and exterior, plan the EV charger, freezer, workshop tools, spa, and sauna.
