A critical-load panel is a subpanel that holds only the circuits that have to stay on when the utility does not — fed through a transfer method that actually includes them. It is not the whole house on a generator, and it is not a battery. It is the electrical structure that decides what survives an outage.

A defined subset, not the whole house
The essential circuits — a furnace, a fridge, a well pump, a few outlets and lights — are moved to their own panel. Backing up everything is a bigger, more expensive machine; a critical-load panel is the deliberate short list.

Fed through a transfer method
The panel is connected so a generator or battery can feed it without backfeeding the utility. That transfer — an interlock or a transfer switch — is part of the same system.

This job is the electrical work
We build the subpanel, run its feeder, and move the essential circuits onto it, with the transfer method wired in. The generator or battery that powers it is a separate purchase and a separate decision.
So the first thing to settle is which circuits genuinely have to stay on — that list is the whole design.
Critical-load panel work is the subpanel and transfer, not the generator
This is the part worth being exact about. Litel does the electrical side of a critical-load setup. The equipment that generates the power is bought separately.
What we install
The critical-load subpanel, the feeder that supplies it, the transfer method that switches the source, and the work of moving the essential circuits onto the new panel. That is a complete electrical job, with its own permit and inspection.
What is a separate purchase
The generator or the battery itself. We wire the system to accept it and size the electrical work to match, but the machine is your purchase. A portable or standby generator is generator and transfer-switch work; a battery’s house-side prep is battery-ready electrical.
The critical-load list is the design of the panel
A critical-load panel is only as good as the list of circuits on it. Too few and the outage is miserable; too many and the generator or battery cannot carry it. Getting that list right is most of the job.

Start from what must run
Heat or cooling, refrigeration, a well or sump pump, medical equipment, and enough light and outlets to live. We build the list from how the house is actually used, not a generic template.

Match it to the source
The total on the panel has to fit what the generator or battery can deliver. The size of the machine you plan to buy shapes how long the list can be, which is why the two decisions are made together.

Size the feeder and the panel
Once the list is set, the subpanel and its feeder are sized for it, with headroom only where it is deliberate. That is the difference between a panel that works in an outage and one that trips.
When a critical-load panel isn’t the right job
A critical-load panel is a specific structure. Three related jobs are not this job.
You want the whole house backed up
That is a larger transfer and a bigger machine, wired at the main rather than a subset — start at transfer switch and size the generator to the house.
The battery is not on site yet
If a battery is the plan and the equipment has not arrived, the house-side path is battery-ready electrical — the landing, the loads, and the transfer, ready for the unit.
This is a commercial building
A designed subset for a business, with code-required life-safety kept separate from optional standby, is critical-load distribution — a different product and a different page.

Do you supply the generator or battery?
No — that is a separate purchase. This job is the electrical work: the critical-load subpanel, the feeder, the transfer method, and moving the essential circuits. We size and wire the system to accept the machine you buy.
How many circuits can go on a critical-load panel?
As many as your generator or battery can carry. The list of essential circuits and the size of the source are decided together — a longer list needs a bigger machine. We build the list from how the house is actually used.
Is this the same as a transfer switch?
Related, not the same. A transfer switch chooses the source; a critical-load panel is the subpanel that holds the circuits being backed up. A full setup usually has both, and we wire them as one system.
Can I add this to my existing panel later?
Often yes. A critical-load subpanel is built alongside the existing panel, and the essential circuits are moved onto it. What matters is that the loads and the transfer method are planned together, not bolted on afterward.
Is a house critical-load panel the same as commercial critical-load distribution?
No. The business version is critical-load distribution — designed for the building, and careful to keep legally required life-safety separate from optional standby. This job is the residential job.
What is meant by critical load?
The circuits you still want on when the power is out: fridge, well, a few lights, medical equipment you name. We put those on a subpanel or a transfer switch.
